Six Goals From 13.8 xG: Forest Have the Biggest Shortfall in Europe's Top Five Leagues

Nottingham Forest have scored 6 goals in 8 Premier League matches from chances worth 13.8 expected goals (xG). That 7.8 shortfall is the widest of the 96 clubs in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1, ahead of Venezia on 6.9 and Le Havre on 6.6. At the other end, Barcelona have 40 goals from 31.7 xG and Lazio lead Serie A on 25 points from chances worth 14.4 expected points.

This page sets the five top-flight tables side by side, with the figures as they stood on 28 October. Each club is counted on the matches in its own table, which is eight apiece in the Premier League and Ligue 1, seven in the Bundesliga, eight or nine in Serie A and ten in La Liga, bar Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club on nine because their 0-0 on 10 October has no xG attached yet. Every comparison below is within one table.

What an xG table shows

xG gives every shot a value between 0 and 1 for how often shots like it are scored, so a team's xG is the goals an average finisher would have got from its chances. An xG table lists each club's xG, the xG it has conceded (xGA) and the expected points (xPts) those chances were worth, so the gap to what really happened is the interesting column: plus means more than the chances deserved, minus means less. Our xG explainer covers the method.

La Liga is the only one of the five clearly scoring above its xG, 3.4% over across 99 matches. Serie A (1.8% over) and the Bundesliga (0.7% over) are close to level, while the Premier League (4.7% under) and Ligue 1 (4.4% under) are scoring below their chances, as is the Championship (3.6% under).

Premier League: Forest have the chances, just not the goals

Nottingham Forest are 18th on 6 points but fifth on expected points (13.4), the biggest points gap in the league (-7.4). They created 2.65 xG at Ipswich on 23 October and drew 1-1; at Palace on 11 October they had 2.57 xG and lost 3-1. They've failed to score in four of their eight, each time with between 0.72 and 1.41 xG. It isn't one forward: Liam Delap has 1 goal from 2.83 xG, Morgan Gibbs-White 1 from 2.06 and Igor Jesus 1 from 2.02 in 257 minutes. The Statz Power Rankings have Forest 10th of 20, nowhere near the bottom three.

The league as a whole has 222 goals from 232.9 xG in 80 matches, or 2.78 goals a match against 2.91 xG.

La Liga: Barcelona are 8.3 goals ahead of their chances

Barcelona have 40 from 31.7 xG after 10 matches, the widest gap above xG in the five leagues. Raphinha accounts for a big part of it with 13 goals from 8.27 xG. The chances themselves are still the best in the league: Barcelona top the xPts table on 23.3 and the Power Rankings have them first.

Real Sociedad are 5th on 19 points but 13th on xPts (12.1). Villarreal are the mirror image, 10th on 12 points and 3rd on xPts (18.3), with 15 from 20.4 xG. Georges Mikautadze has 3 from 4.16 and Ayoze Pérez 1 from 3.17.

Serie A: Lazio lead the table, their chances say sixth

Lazio are top on 25 points after 9 matches, 10.6 more than their chances were worth (14.4 xPts), the biggest surplus in the five leagues. On xPts alone they'd be sixth. Their 22 goals from 14.7 xG include the 6-2 win at Sassuolo on 27 October, six goals from 3.24 xG, which added 2.8 to the gap on its own. Tijjani Noslin has 4 from 2.43 and Gustav Isaksen 3 from 1.15. The Power Rankings have Lazio 8th of 20. Our preview of that game has the line-ups and the projections.

Inter are the opposite case, 23 goals from 23.1 xG, almost exactly level, and first on xPts (18.5). Venezia have 6 from 12.9 xG and 3 points from 10.1 xPts, and John Yeboah has 1 goal from 3.43 xG.

Bundesliga: level overall, with Leipzig flying and Stuttgart stuck

Overall the Bundesliga is almost level, but the clubs aren't. RB Leipzig have 20 from 15.6 xG and Bayern Munich 25 from 21.1 xG, though Bayern's 17 points are within 0.4 of their 16.6 xPts, so the table isn't flattering them. Stuttgart are 15th on 6 points, 8th on xPts and 5th in the Power Rankings, with 10 from 14.2 xG. Köln and Schalke are each 3.3 short.

Marseille are the biggest overperformers with 18 from 13.4 xG, and PSG lead on 17 points and top the xPts table (15.8) despite 16 from 18.8 xG.

Championship: Blackburn and Stoke are well clear of their chances

After 12 matches each, the 24 clubs of the Championship have 416 goals from 431.4 xG in 144 matches, or 2.89 goals a match against 3.00 xG. Blackburn Rovers have 19 from 12.5 xG and won 1-0 at Bristol City on 13 October from 0.23 xG; Andri Gudjohnsen has 8 from 2.19. Stoke City have 18 from 11.8 xG, and the points follow, 20 from 12.8 xPts for Stoke and 18 from 11.4 for Blackburn. Cardiff City have 19 from 25.0 xG, and Preston North End have 5 points from 14.1 xPts, the biggest points shortfall in the division.

Who's conceding more, and fewer, than their chances against

The same sum works at the back: goals conceded minus xGA, where a minus means fewer goals against than the chances suggest. Augsburg have let in 13 against 20.2 xGA, the widest gap either way, and Lille are third in Ligue 1 on 15 points from 9.5 xPts, with 6 conceded against 12.9 xGA.
