Four straight unders in the series and a Chiefs side that just ran for 220. The model has Kansas City by four and a half, not six and a half: the Colts with the points, the under, the scorers and the props for Colts at Chiefs.
A team that cannot stop the run, against a team that just ran for 220
Sunday Night Football, 20 September, 8:20pm Eastern at Arrowhead, which is 01:20 BST on Monday morning. The Chiefs opened with a 31-10 win over Denver built on 220 rushing yards, second in the league, and a defence that allowed 131 passing yards, the fewest in the league, and 61 on the ground. The Colts opened by conceding 41 points and 202 rushing yards to Baltimore, and their six-game losing run back into last season is the longest in the league. On paper, and on the matchup grid, this is a mismatch: Kansas City's run game against Indianapolis' run defence is a 91% Chiefs edge, and every other unit leans the same way.
The series says something different. These two have met four times since 2019 and every one of them has gone under, at an average of 39 points a game, with the Colts covering three of the four. Last November the Chiefs won 23-20 as three and a half point favourites, under a 50.5 total. Whatever the tape says, this fixture has been a grind for years, and the model is closer to the series than the market is.
Where the game is won
The matchup grid is all Chiefs: their run game against the Colts front at 91%, their pass defence against Daniel Jones' passing game at 82%, their run defence against Jonathan Taylor at 70%, and Patrick Mahomes against the Indianapolis secondary at 64%. The projected usage follows it: Mahomes 261 passing yards and 1.6 touchdowns with 24 on the ground, Kenneth Walker 61 rushing yards, Jones 205 yards and 1.2 touchdowns.
What keeps the model from a blowout is the Chiefs' own offence. Kansas City scored 21 points a game last season, 21st in the league, and finished 2025 on a five-game losing streak before Week 1. The model projects them at 24 here, not 31, because one game against Denver does not erase a season, and it projects the Colts at 20 because Taylor is projected at 86 rushing yards against a front that is good but not the Ravens. On the injury report, Kansas City are without tackle Ethan Driskell and the Colts have cornerback Cameron Mitchell on injured reserve. Indianapolis have seven days' rest to the Chiefs' six.
The model's number
Chiefs 24.3, Colts 19.8. Kansas City by 4.5, a 44.2 total, the Chiefs winning 63 times in 100. The market has the Chiefs by six and a half, a 46.5 total and a home moneyline of 1.34, which implies 74.4%. Two points on the spread and two on the total, and both gaps sit inside the band where the record says to trust them, which is why both sides rate five stars.
Indianapolis plus six and a half at 2.00 on DraftKings is a 55.9% model call against 47.8% implied, five stars, and it is the bet: a four and a half point game with two points of cushion on the key number of seven. The under 46.5 at 1.94 on Kalshi is a 56.9% call against 51.5%, five stars, and four straight unders in the series at an average of 39 make it the easiest under of the week to like. The Colts moneyline at 3.77 carries a 36.9% model probability against 26.5% implied and zero stars, because ten points of raw edge is past the band. A quarter point on a team that has lost six in a row is a quarter point, not a bet.
- Colts +6.5 at the Chiefs — Spread, IND @ KC, Sun 8:20pm ET / Mon 01:20 BST — at 2.00 — Model has it a 4.5-point game. Two points of cushion on the seven, at evens.
- Under 46.5 points — Total, IND @ KC — at 1.94 — Model total 44.2, and four unders in four meetings at an average of 39 points.
- Colts to win — Moneyline, IND @ KC — at 3.77 — The raw edge is ten points and the star rating says do not trust it. A quarter point on the series, not the tape.
Scorers, props and the slip
Jonathan Taylor at 1.74 is the model's 60% scorer and a shade of value; Kenneth Walker at 1.52 is a 44% call and the fade on the board. Rashee Rice at 2.20 is a 32% call, and after a Week 1 in which the Chiefs threw for 172 yards and ran for 220, the model is not pricing him as a target hog this week. The value scorer is Alec Pierce at 4.50, a 32% call against 22% implied, the Colts' deep threat in a game where they will be chasing.
The passing-yards line is the soft one: Mahomes over 224.5 at 1.86 is projected at 261 with a 67% over, and it is consistent with the under, because the model has the Chiefs throwing to a 24-point total rather than a 31-point one. Walker under 79.5 rushing yards at 1.86 (projected 61) is the other side of the same script, and Tyler Warren under 44.5 receiving yards (projected 37) is the Colts prop.
The Single Game Parlays page has one slip here, Second Receiver Ceiling at 46.33: Xavier Worthy to score, Worthy over 39.5 receiving yards and Mahomes over 299.5 passing yards. The correlation model makes it 11.2% against 2.2% implied and 4.5% naive, because if Mahomes throws for 300 the third receiver is where the extra yards go. It is a script in which the game goes over, so do not pair it with the under. 0.15pt.
- Patrick Mahomes over 224.5 passing yards — QB, KC — at 1.86 — Projected 261. The line remembers a 172-yard Week 1; the model does not think that repeats.
- Kenneth Walker III under 79.5 rushing yards — RB, KC — at 1.86 — Projected 61. The 220-yard day was against Denver; the Colts front is bad, not that bad.
- Alec Pierce anytime TD — WR, IND — at 4.50 — The value scorer. A deep threat on a team the model has throwing from behind.
- Second Receiver Ceiling slip — Worthy TD + Worthy o39.5 rec yds + Mahomes o299.5 pass yds — at 46.33 — A 300-yard Mahomes night, priced by the correlation model at five times the implied chance. It needs the over, not the under.
The verdict
Chiefs by a field goal or so, in the low forties. Take the Colts with the points and the under, both at five stars, and keep the moneyline to a quarter. The Mahomes over is the prop, and the slip is the lottery ticket for the night the model is wrong about the total. If Kansas City run for 200 again this is a cover and a push at best; the model does not think the Colts front is quite that bad, and at evens with six and a half, neither do I.
