NFL player prop research tools explained: hit rates, prop streaks, defense vs position, game logs and the props cheat sheet, with a step-by-step research routine.
Good player prop bets come from good research: how often a player has cleared his line, whether he is on a streak, what his opponent allows to his position and how his role is changing. This guide explains the NFL player prop research tools that answer those questions, how to read each one without fooling yourself, and a simple routine for researching any prop on Statz NFL in a few minutes.
Why research NFL player props?
Player props are set off models with far less market feedback than the main spreads and totals. A sportsbook's line on a team's second running back has not been shaped by millions in bets the way a point spread has, which is exactly why careful research can find a soft number. It is also why props carry wider margins and lower limits: the book knows its number is more likely to be wrong.
Prop research comes down to a few questions. What does this player normally do? How often has he cleared this line? Who is he playing, and what does that defence allow? Has his role changed? Is anything about this game unusual? Each of the tools below answers one of those questions. Start with the basics: this season's leaders in rushing yards, receiving yards and touchdowns, each linked to the game log for that market.
The 2026 prop leaders
| Player | Team | Yards | Per game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bijan Robinson | ATL | 580 | 116.0 |
| Kenneth Walker III | KC | 537 | 134.3 |
| James Cook III | BUF | 532 | 106.4 |
| Jahmyr Gibbs | DET | 504 | 100.8 |
| Derrick Henry | BAL | 476 | 95.2 |
| Player | Team | Yards | Per game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jaxon Smith-Njigba | SEA | 583 | 116.6 |
| Chris Olave | NO | 537 | 107.4 |
| CeeDee Lamb | DAL | 507 | 101.4 |
| Drake London | ATL | 488 | 97.6 |
| Christian Watson | GB | 474 | 94.8 |
| Player | Team | TDs | Per game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jahmyr Gibbs | DET | 9 | 1.8 |
| Josh Allen | BUF | 8 | 1.6 |
| Derrick Henry | BAL | 8 | 1.6 |
| Jaxon Smith-Njigba | SEA | 7 | 1.4 |
| Javonte Williams | DAL | 7 | 1.4 |
Regular season, so far. Each name opens that player's game-by-game log for the market. Touchdowns count rushing and receiving scores, the ones an anytime scorer bet pays on.
NFL prop hit rates
A hit rate is how often a player has gone over a line in his recent games. If a receiver's receptions line is 5.5 and he has caught six or more passes in seven of his last ten games, his hit rate at that line is 70%. Hit Rates shows it for every prop bet365 has priced, over the player's last five games, his last ten and the season.
Read hit rates with care. Ten games is a small sample, and a hit rate says nothing about the matchup or a change in role. A rate built when a player was the third receiver is not much use once he becomes the first. The most useful reading is when the hit rate, the projection and the matchup all point the same way, and the least useful is a high hit rate on a line that has already moved to account for it.
NFL player prop streaks
A prop streak is a run of straight games over a line: 60+ rushing yards in eight games in a row, a touchdown in five straight, 5+ receptions in seven. Streaks lists every active run across the league, by market and at the line you choose, with this week's price where bet365 has one.
Streaks are popular because they are easy to read, but they invite the gambler's fallacy in both directions: a streak does not make the next game more likely to hit, and it does not make a miss due. The useful part of a streak is what sits behind it. A running back on a long rushing-yards run is usually the clear lead back in a good offence, and that is worth knowing. Treat the streak as a pointer to the role, then check the role and the price.
NFL defense vs position
Defense vs position measures what each defence has allowed to one position: rushing yards to running backs, receiving yards to wide receivers or tight ends, passing yards and touchdowns to quarterbacks. A defence that ranks near the bottom against tight ends is a good matchup for a tight end prop even if it is strong overall.
Best Matchups ranks every defence this way over its last ten games, so the numbers reflect how the defence is playing now rather than last season, and lists the players who face each one this week. Defence ranks are most useful at the extremes: the top and bottom few defences at a position tell you more than the middle of the table. Combine them with the player's role, because a soft matchup does nothing for a player who will not see the ball.
The NFL prop bet cheat sheet
The Props Tool is the cheat sheet that pulls everything into one page: every bet365 prop for the week with the line, both prices, our chance, the hit rates, the matchup and the player's last five games. Filter it by game, kickoff window, position and market, sort by any column, and switch between the main line and the milestones such as 60+ rushing yards.
If you want the model's picks rather than the whole sheet, Prop Picks lists the week's best props, and our guide to AI NFL player props explains how they work.
Game logs, stat pages and depth charts
Every player has a stat page for each of his markets, with his last ten games set against this week's line, his average, his hit rate and his next game: Derrick Henry's rushing yards, Puka Nacua's receptions, Josh Allen's passing yards and Travis Kelce's receiving yards are typical. His full game log sits on his player page.
Roles change through a season, and the depth chart is where it shows first. Every team's depth chart lists starters and backups at every position, and the injury report carries every designation, which matters most for props on the players who inherit the work.
Stat Finder and Player Compare
Stat Finder answers questions of the history directly: how often has this player gone over a number, over any window, at home or away. Player Compare puts up to four players side by side, which is the quickest way to judge two receivers on the same team or two backs splitting carries.
The stat leaders show who leads the league in every category this season, and the power rankings give a quick read on how strong each offence and defence really is.
A prop research routine, step by step
- Start with the line: open the player's stat page and look at his last ten games against it.
- Check his role: snaps, targets and carries in recent weeks, and where he sits on the depth chart.
- Check the matchup: what his opponent has allowed to his position on Best Matchups.
- Read the game: the spread and total tell you whether his team is expected to throw or run.
- Check the news: the injury report for him, his teammates and the defence he faces.
- Compare with the projection and the price in the Props Tool, and shop for the best line.
What the best NFL stats site for betting should have
Plenty of sites list NFL stats. A stats site built for betting sets those stats against this week's lines. Look for game logs read against the current line, hit rates at that line, defence vs position over a recent window, streaks, depth charts and injuries in one place, and a projection for every player and prop. Statz NFL is built around exactly that, and the research tools are free to use.
NFL depth charts by team
Depth charts are the quickest way to spot a changing role. AFC: Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots, Bengals, Browns, Ravens, Steelers, Colts, Jaguars, Texans, Titans, Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs and Raiders.
NFC: Commanders, Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Bears, Lions, Packers, Vikings, Buccaneers, Falcons, Panthers, Saints, 49ers, Cardinals, Rams and Seahawks.
Final word: research beats hunches
No single number tells you whether a prop is worth betting. Hit rates show history, streaks point to roles, defence vs position shows the matchup and the projection pulls them together. Use them in that order, check the news, and bet the props where everything agrees and the price is still right.
