Buccaneers at Cowboys Preview: Week 5 Thursday Night Picks, Odds and Projections

Published October 8, 2026 by Statz NFL.

A winless Tampa Bay with Jalon Daniels in for Baker Mayfield against a Dallas defence that cannot stop the run. The market has the Cowboys by eight and a half; the model has it a one-score game. The spread, the published best bet, the props and the two same-game slips for Buccaneers at Cowboys.

An 0-4 team, a backup quarterback and eight and a half points

Thursday night in Arlington kicks off at 1:15am UK time on Friday morning, 8:15pm Eastern, and on paper it is the least interesting game of the week: Tampa Bay are 0-4 and have lost five of their last six, Baker Mayfield is out with the thumb, and Jalon Daniels makes his first start for them. Dallas are 2-2, score 30.5 a game, the third-best offence in the league, and are at home. The market makes them eight and a half point favourites at a total of 47.5. Nothing about that reads wrong until you look at the Dallas defence.

Dallas allow 28 points a game, 28th in the league, and 150 rushing yards a game, 31st. They have four sacks in four games, 30th. Tampa Bay, for all the losing, allow 24 and give up 78.5 rushing yards a game, third-best in the league, with a pass defence ranked eighth. The Buccaneers' problem is the other side of the ball: 19 points a game, 16.5 first downs, 34.5% on third down, a turnover margin of minus five. The series is 3-2 to Dallas and the under is 3-2 with an average total of 44.8; the last meeting, Week 16 of 2024, was a 26-24 Dallas win. Both teams had four days.

Where the game is won

The matchup grid is as lopsided as any this week, and it leans the wrong way for the price. Tampa Bay's run game against the Dallas run defence is an 89% Buccaneers edge; Dallas running against the Tampa Bay front is a 79% Buccaneers edge too. The Cowboys' advantages are through the air: Dallas throwing against the Tampa Bay secondary is a 51% coin flip and Tampa Bay throwing with Daniels is a 63% Dallas edge. So the game the model sees is Bucky Irving running into the softest front he will see all year while Dak Prescott throws for 265 yards and 1.7 touchdowns, with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens doing most of the catching.

Daniels projects at 20 of 31 for 225 yards, 1.4 touchdowns and 1.3 interceptions, plus 35 yards on the ground. That interception number is the Tampa Bay story: a backup behind a line that does not protect, against a defence that does not pressure. The model's score is Dallas 26.1, Tampa Bay 23.6, a 49.6 total, the Cowboys winning 57 times in 100. The market has the home side by eight and a half. Six points of daylight on a main line is as wide as it gets.

The model's number

The Best Bets card for Thursday went out on Wednesday morning, one single: Tyler Goodson under 17.5 rushing yards at 1.86 on bet365, five stars, the model at 63.7% against 50% implied. Goodson projects at 12.6; Javonte Williams has the backfield and Goodson is the change of pace. It is the only Thursday tip on the ledger and it is a point.

On the game lines, the lean is the points. The acca board rates Tampa Bay plus six and a half at 2.41 on Polymarket four stars, the model at 51.6% against 41.5% implied, and that is half a point. At the main line, plus eight and a half, the model has the Buccaneers covering 67 times in 100 against 48 implied, the biggest gap on any spread this week. If your book only offers the main line, that is the bet; if it offers the alternate at 2.41, take the price. Tampa Bay to win outright at 5.13 is a 31% model call against 19.5% implied, three stars, and a quarter point for those who want the upset. The over at 47.5 is a two-star lean at 1.98, the model at 52%; no bet.

  • Tyler Goodson under 17.5 rushing yards — RB, DAL · the published Best Bet — at 1.86 — Projected 12.6. Williams has the backfield; Goodson gets the leftovers. Game preview
  • Buccaneers +6.5 v the Cowboys — Spread, TB @ DAL, Fri 1:15am UK / Thu 8:15pm ET — at 2.41 — The model has it a one-score game; the market gives eight and a half. The alternate line pays for the risk. Game preview
  • Buccaneers to win — Moneyline, TB @ DAL — at 5.13 — A 31% shot at better than 4/1. The Dallas defence makes it possible. Game preview

Scorers, props and the slips

The scorer board is a fade board. Javonte Williams at 1.41 is a 55% model call priced at 71%; CeeDee Lamb at 1.83 is a 40% call priced at 55%. Bucky Irving at 2.70 is the one priced about right, a 40% call against 37% implied, and he is the Buccaneer most likely to score given what this front does to running backs.

The props are where the Daniels start pays. Jalon Daniels over 182.5 passing yards at 1.86 is projected at 225, a 61% model call, five stars on the Props Tool: a backup, but a backup who will be throwing from behind. Bucky Irving over 51.5 rushing yards at 1.86 is projected at 72, a 66% call, and it is the matchup bet of the night. Daniels under 44.5 rushing yards at 1.95 is projected at 35, a 71% under. The Single Game Parlays page carries two slips here, both at 0.15 of a point. The Second Receiver Ceiling at 56.03 is Daniels over 199.5 passing yards at 2.32, Chris Godwin Jr. to score at 5.75 and Godwin over 49.5 receiving yards at 4.20, the model at 10% against 1.8% implied. The Throwing Festival at 54.58 is Daniels over 199.5, Godwin over 59.5, Prescott over 262.5 and Ryan Flournoy over 31.5, the model at 9.6% against 1.8%. One game state, four legs: both teams throwing because the Dallas defence lets them.

  • Jalon Daniels over 182.5 passing yards — QB, TB — at 1.86 — Projected 225. Thirty-one attempts from behind against the 21st-ranked pass defence. Game preview
  • Bucky Irving over 51.5 rushing yards — RB, TB — at 1.86 — Projected 72 against a front allowing 150 a game, 31st in the league. Game preview
  • Second Receiver Ceiling, TB @ DAL — Daniels o199.5 · Godwin TD · Godwin o49.5 — at 56.03 — Godwin is third in the target tree and priced like a bit-part. Three legs, one script. Game preview

The verdict

Dallas win more often than not, and the model says so: 57 times in 100. They do not win by eight and a half often enough to justify the price, because the defence that gave up 34 to Baltimore and 30 to Houston has not changed. Tampa Bay with the points, Goodson under on the card, Daniels and Irving over on the props, and a quarter on the Buccaneers outright for the night the Dallas defence finally costs them.

The FanTeam Thursday contest is £91m for six players: the optimiser captains CeeDee Lamb with Prescott as vice-captain, then Daniels, Javonte Williams, Ryan Flournoy and Cade Otton for 101.8 projected points. The Week 5 FanTeam piece has the rest of the week.
