The league's best passing offence against the league's worst pass defence, and the league's worst run defence against Jahmyr Gibbs. The model has it a two-point game: the Panthers with the points, the scorers, the Hubbard under and the slip for Lions at Panthers.
Two offences, no defence
Sunday Night Football, 4 October, 8:20pm Eastern in Charlotte, 01:20 BST on Monday. Detroit are 2-1 and score 31 a game, third in the league; they also allow 31.7, last in the league, and 326 passing yards a game, also last. Carolina are 1-2 and score 29.7, sixth, with the league's best passing attack at 313 yards a game; they allow 193 rushing yards a game, last in the league. Every number on the tape points at a shootout, and the market has it at 50.5.
The series is level at two apiece and Carolina have won both at home, including a 37-23 win in December 2022 as two-and-a-half point underdogs. Detroit won the last meeting 42-24 in 2023. Both teams are on seven days' rest. Carolina are without receiver Xavier Legette and guard Damien Lewis, with Jalen Coker questionable with a quad; Detroit are without guard Ben Bartch and defensive end Josh Paschal.
Where the game is won
The matchup grid has two near-certainties pointing opposite ways. Carolina's passing game against Detroit's pass defence is a 97% Panthers edge; Detroit's run game against Carolina's run defence is a 96% Lions edge. The other two units are coin flips. Which means the game is Bryce Young throwing to Coker and Tetairoa McMillan against Jahmyr Gibbs running at a front that has been trampled for three weeks, and the model has Gibbs at 28 points a game on the season rate, the highest of any player this week.
The projections: Jared Goff 248 yards and 1.8 touchdowns, Young 228 yards, 1.5 touchdowns and 15 on the ground. Chuba Hubbard is the Panthers' back and the model has him running into Detroit's run defence, which is the one unit on the field that is merely bad rather than last.
The model's number
Lions 26.1, Panthers 24.4. Detroit by 1.7 and a 50.4 total, the Lions winning 55 times in 100. The market has Detroit by three and a half, a 50.5 total and a Panthers moneyline of 2.67. The total is priced to the decimal and there is no bet on it. The spread is a point and three-quarters apart, which is enough for a four-star pick.
Carolina plus three and a half at 2.06 on Kalshi is a 51.9% model call against 48.5% implied, four stars, and it is the bet: the hook on the right side of three in a game the model has inside a field goal. The Panthers moneyline at 2.82 is a 40.2% call against 35.5%, three stars, a half point. Nothing in this game rates five stars and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
- Panthers +3.5 v the Lions — Spread, DET @ CAR, Sun 8:20pm ET / Mon 01:20 BST — at 2.06 — Model has Detroit by 1.7. The hook past three is the whole edge. Game preview
- Panthers to win — Moneyline, DET @ CAR — at 2.82 — Carolina have won both home meetings in the series, and this one is a 97% passing edge for them. Game preview
Scorers, props and the slip
Gibbs at 1.30 to score is a 78% model call and priced fairly; Amon-Ra St. Brown at 1.80 is a 46% call priced at 56% and the fade; Hubbard at 1.74 is 49% against 57% and a smaller one. The value is Isaac TeSlaa at 5.25, a 33.5% call against 19%, the Lions' third receiver in a game the model has at 50 points against the league's worst pass defence. A quarter point.
The five-star prop is Hubbard under 18.5 receiving yards at 1.86: projected 13.8, a 63% under, because Carolina throw to their receivers in this projection and run Hubbard into the one decent unit Detroit have. The Single Game Parlays page has one slip, a Primetime Parlay at 8.48 from the four likeliest props in the game, legs on the page for members. A quarter point.
- Chuba Hubbard under 18.5 receiving yards — RB, CAR — at 1.86 — Projected 13.8. The Panthers' passing game goes to the receivers, not the back. Game preview
- Isaac TeSlaa anytime TD — WR, DET — at 5.25 — The third receiver against the last-ranked pass defence, in a 50-point projection. Game preview
The verdict
A 26-24 kind of game that the market has at 27-24. Carolina with the points is the bet, the moneyline a half-point speculation, the Hubbard under the prop and TeSlaa the longshot scorer. If Coker is ruled out the Panthers' passing edge thins and the spread gets harder to like; check Saturday.
