NFL team totals explained: how a team total differs from the game total, how it settles, what moves it and how to read one against a team's projected points.
NFL team totals let you bet on one side's points instead of the combined score. They come from the same numbers as the game total and the spread, but they are a different bet. This guide explains how NFL team totals work, how they settle, what moves them, when a team total beats a game total, and how to research them with the Statz NFL game projections, odds board and over/under records.
What is an NFL team total bet?
An NFL team total is an over/under on the points one team scores, whatever its opponent does. If a team's total is 24.5, the over needs 25 or more points from that team and the under needs 24 or fewer. The other side has its own team total, and the game total is the line on both teams' points added together.
Team totals come straight out of the two main lines. As our NFL totals guide explains, a game total is two scoring forecasts added together, and the spread tells you how they split. A total of 44.5 with a favourite at -6.5 implies roughly 25.5 points for the favourite and 19 for the underdog, so the team totals will sit close to those numbers.
Below are this season's over/under results against the closing game total, with every team's record linked to its over/under page.
NFL over/under results, 2026 season
Went over: 50.0% (40 over, 40 under, 0 pushes). Average closing total: 44.9 (Points scored per game: 46.4). Games: 80 (Through Week 6).

How NFL team totals settle
A team total settles on the official final score, and at most books every point the team scores counts, including defensive and special teams touchdowns, safeties and two-point conversions. Overtime counts too, unless the market says otherwise. A whole-number team total can push, with the stake returned; a half-point line always produces a winner.
First-half and quarter team totals settle on their own period only, which our guide to first-half and quarter lines covers. Read your book's rules page before relying on any of this.
Game totals vs team totals: what is the difference?
A game total asks one question about two teams; a team total asks it about one, and that decides which opinion you are actually betting.
Say you think an offence is underrated and will score 30. On the game total, that view only pays if the other side plays its part: your team scores 30, the opponent scores 10, the game finishes on 40 and a 45.5 over loses even though you were right. On the team total, the 30 is all that matters. If your view is about a defence instead, a team total under on the side it faces isolates it.
The trade-off is price. Team totals take less money than game totals, so books often charge a little more for them, perhaps -115 a side rather than -110, and limits are lower. At -110 you need to win 52.4% of bets to break even; at -115 the bar rises to about 53.5%.
What influences NFL team totals?
A team total is a forecast of one offence against one defence. These are the inputs that move it most:
- The quarterback: a starter ruled out or returning moves a team total more than any other news.
- The opposing defence and its injuries: a missing pass rusher or top cornerback matters more to the other side's team total than to the game total.
- The spread and game script: a big favourite can slow down once ahead, while a team expected to trail throws more and can add late points.
- Red-zone finishing: a drive that ends in a field goal is worth less than half a touchdown drive, so an offence's finishing record matters as much as its yardage.
- Turnovers and non-offensive scores: a defence that forces turnovers hands its offence short fields, and a defensive touchdown counts on the team total.
- Weather: strong wind hurts the passing game and long field goals, and it lands on both team totals.
Team total stats that matter
Start with points scored per game, then be careful with it. A season average can be swollen by one blowout, so look at the typical game as well: how many of a team's games have cleared the number on offer. A team that averages 24 because of a single 45-point game is closer to a 20-point side most of the time.
Team scores also cluster. Points arrive in threes and sevens, so scores such as 17, 20, 24 and 27 come up far more often than their neighbours. A move from 23.5 to 24.5 crosses one of those common scores and is worth more than a move from 21.5 to 22.5. It is the team total version of the key numbers that shape spreads, softer but real.
Then turn the price into a probability. If you make the over a 55% shot and the book charges -110, which needs 52.4%, the bet has a small edge; at -130, which needs 56.5%, it does not. That gap is the expected value of the bet.
How to research team totals with Statz NFL
Statz NFL does not price team total markets, but it publishes the number that matters most: each team's projected points for every game. The game projections give both sides' points, the margin, the total and the win probability. They update daily as injuries, depth charts and lines move, and a game's projections are frozen at kickoff. Set a team's projected points beside its team total and you can see at once whether the line looks high or low.
The odds board shows every book's spread and total side by side, with the line each game opened at, so you can work out the market's implied split yourself. Each team's over/under page lists its games against the closing total, its stats page shows points scored and allowed with league ranks, and the injury report carries every designation.
Team total bet types explained
Most books offer team totals in several shapes:
- Full-game team total: an over/under on one team's points, overtime included at most books.
- Alternate team totals: the same bet at other lines, each with its own price. Our guide to alternate lines covers how they are priced.
- First-half and quarter team totals: one team's points in that period only.
- Team to score a milestone: 20, 30 or more points, priced as a yes or no.
- Team touchdowns and field goals: an over/under on how many touchdowns, or field goals, a team scores.
Popular team total bets and tactics
The classic use is the favourite you like but do not trust to cover. If you expect a team to score freely but suspect its defence will give up late points, its team total over backs the offence without needing the margin. The mirror image works for a weak offence: rather than lay a big number with its opponent, take its team total under.
Quarterback news is where team totals react most. When a starter is ruled out, his team's total falls, and the opponent's often rises a little, since a struggling offence tends to hand the ball back quickly and in better field position. Check whether both team totals have moved, not just one.
It is also worth adding up the two team totals. When they clearly sum to more or less than the game total, one of the three numbers is out of step, and that is where to look first.
Common team total mistakes
The avoidable losses come from a short list:
- Betting the game total when your opinion is really about one team.
- Forgetting that defensive and special teams touchdowns count. A pick six lands on the team total with the offence on the sideline.
- Reading a points average swollen by one blowout as a typical game.
- Ignoring the price. Team totals often carry more margin than game totals, so the break-even bar is higher.
- Treating 23.5 and 24.5 as the same line when the gap between them crosses a common score.
- Betting before the quarterback news is settled, then watching the line move past you.
Team totals by quarterback
No player moves a team total like the quarterback, and each one's page shows his touchdown passes game by game, the clearest guide to how his offence finishes drives. Start with Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, Jared Goff, Baker Mayfield, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and Justin Herbert.
Their touchdown pass lines are on the Props Tool, with our chance beside each price.
Team totals by team
Every team's over/under page lists its games against the closing total and how often it clears the common lines. AFC: Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots, Bengals, Browns, Ravens, Steelers, Colts, Jaguars, Texans, Titans, Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs and Raiders.
NFC: Commanders, Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Bears, Lions, Packers, Vikings, Buccaneers, Falcons, Panthers, Saints, 49ers, Cardinals, Rams and Seahawks.
Final word: bet the team, not the game
Team totals are the cleanest way to bet a view on one side of the ball. Work out what a team should score, compare it with its projected points and the line, check the quarterback news, and bet only when the price leaves room for your opinion. When your view is about both teams, the game total is the better tool; when it is about one, the team total usually is.
