Falcons at Packers Preview: Thursday Night Football Week 3 Picks, Odds and Projections

The league's worst offence after two weeks visits a Packers side that cannot run and has lost Josh Jacobs. The model has Green Bay by eight: the spread, the Watson props, the scorers and the slips for Falcons at Packers.

Two teams that cannot do the thing they are built to do

Thursday Night Football at Lambeau, 24 September, 8:15pm Eastern, 01:15 BST on Friday. Atlanta arrive 0-2 with eight points a game, last in the league, 144 passing yards a game, last in the league, and a turnover margin of minus six, last in the league. They lost 34-3 at home to Carolina on Sunday. Green Bay arrive 1-1 off a 20-17 win over the Jets, averaging 64.5 rushing yards a game, last in the league, and now without Josh Jacobs, who is out.

The series is short and Green Bay have covered all three meetings since 2018, the last of them in 2023 when Atlanta won 25-24 outright as three-point favourites. The average total across the three is 49.7 and two went over. Both teams are on four days' rest.

Where the game is won

The matchup grid is two mismatches pointing opposite ways. Atlanta's passing game against Green Bay's pass defence is a 96% Packers edge, which is what happens when a 144-yard-a-game passing attack meets a secondary allowing 199. Green Bay's run game against Atlanta's run defence is a 97% Falcons edge, because Atlanta allow 63 rushing yards a game, the fewest in the league, and Green Bay cannot run at all. Green Bay throwing against Atlanta's pass defence is a 76% Packers edge, and that is the game: Jordan Love throws, Atlanta cannot.

The projections follow it. Love projects 228 yards and 1.6 touchdowns; Michael Penix Jr. projects 204 yards and 1.2. Bijan Robinson is the one Atlanta player the model rates highly, 25 points a game on the season rate, and he is running into the Packers' eighth-ranked rush defence. Christian Watson projects 5.3 catches as Green Bay's lead target, and with Jacobs out and Matthew Golden the second option, that is where the ball goes. Green Bay also have two tackles, Zach Bako-Bewele and Brant Banks, out.

The model's number

Packers 27.4, Falcons 19.4. Green Bay by eight and a 46.7 total, the Packers winning 72 times in 100. The market has Green Bay by four and a half to five and a half, a 43.5 total and a home moneyline of 1.38, which implies 72.5%. The model and the market agree on the winner to the decimal. They disagree by three points on the margin and three on the total.

Green Bay minus four and a half at 1.94 on Polymarket is a 60.2% model call against 51.5% implied, five stars, and it is the bet. The over 43.5 at 2.20 is a 59.6% call with nine points of raw edge and rates zero, because the gap is past the band, and it is also the script behind both published slips. Half a point on a plus-money over in a game the model has at 47 is a lean I can live with; a point is not.

  • Packers -4.5 v the Falcons — Spread, ATL @ GB, Thu 8:15pm ET / Fri 01:15 BST — at 1.94 — Model has it an eight-point game. Take 4.5 rather than 5.5; the extra point crosses nothing but is still a point.
  • Over 43.5 points — Total, ATL @ GB — at 2.20 — Model total 46.7. Zero stars because the gap is past the band; half a point because the market has priced Atlanta's eight points a game as permanent.

Scorers, props and the slips

Two five-star props in one game, both on Green Bay's passing game. Christian Watson over 4.5 receptions at 2.10 is projected at 5.3, a 57% over against 45% implied. Tucker Kraft under 45.5 receiving yards at 1.86 is projected at 44, a 62% under. Read together: Love throws, Watson catches it, Kraft does not. Watson to score at 2.30 is a 48% call against 43%, the value scorer in the game. Bijan Robinson at 1.57 is a 57% call priced at 64% and the fade, even for the best player on the field.

The Single Game Parlays page has two slips here and both are the over's script. Throwing Festival at 23.76: Love over 274.5, Penix over 249.5, Jahan Dotson over 17.5 receiving yards, which the correlation model makes 6% against 4.2% implied. And Blowup Total at 141: five legs including both quarterback overs and Watson and Drake London to score, 2.7% against 0.7%. The first is a 0.25pt slip, the second a 0.1pt lottery ticket, and neither belongs next to a bet on the under.

  • Christian Watson over 4.5 receptions — WR, GB — at 2.10 — Projected 5.3 as the lead target with the run game last in the league and Jacobs out.
  • Tucker Kraft under 45.5 receiving yards — TE, GB — at 1.86 — Projected 44. The targets concentrate on the receivers in this projection.
  • Christian Watson anytime TD — WR, GB — at 2.30 — The value scorer, and a leg of the Blowup Total slip.
  • Throwing Festival slip — Love o274.5 + Penix o249.5 + Dotson o17.5 rec yds — at 23.76 — Both quarterbacks throwing in a game the model has three points over the number.

The verdict

Packers by a touchdown and a bit, in a game with more points than the market expects. Green Bay minus four and a half is the bet, the Watson receptions and Kraft under are the props, and the over is a half-point lean. The Falcons' offence is bad enough that the market has stopped pricing their good players; the model has not.
