4.93 Yellows a Game: Stuart Attwell Has Sunderland v Leeds, and Two Other Whistles Worth Knowing About

Fifty-one fixtures across the six leagues we cover have a referee attached for the weekend, and the officials are further apart than the teams. Among the 37 with 15 or more matches in our rolling two-season window, the averages run from 18.9 fouls a game (Bastian Dankert, who has RB Leipzig v Elversberg) to 27.6 (Andrea Colombo, Napoli v Roma), a swing of 8.7 before a ball is kicked. The highest and lowest team fouls projections on the board are only 5.4 apart, 14.1 down to 8.7.

So the column runs the same three layers every week: who is calling the most fouls, which fixture they've been handed, and whether either side is already fouling above the number our model projects for it. When all three point the same way it's an angle. When two do, we say so. Every average here comes from the window the referee pages use, and anyone on fewer than 15 matches is kept out of the lead. The previous edition has the September numbers.

Stuart Attwell: Sunderland v Leeds United (Sun, 4:30pm UK)

Stuart Attwell has the highest yellow-card average of any official on the board with a real body of work: 4.93 a game across 29 matches in the window, with 22.3 fouls alongside, which is why this fixture heads the column. The projection has Sunderland at 10.3 fouls and Leeds United at 11.6, 21.9 between them, so Attwell's own average is within half a foul of the fixture projection before either side's recent form counts.

Both teams are fouling a little past their number. Sunderland's last five read 14, 8, 19, 7 and 13 for an average of 12.2, 1.9 above their projection, and Leeds's read 10, 8, 10, 20 and 16 for 12.8, 1.2 above theirs (the most recent of each run is the last figure). Neither gap is dramatic, but they point the same way as the referee, and with a card rate like his it leans towards bookings more than raw fouls. The full match page has the rest, and the Sunday bet builders cover the match too.

Robert Jones: Hull City v Brentford (Sun, 2pm UK)

Robert Jones averages 22.5 fouls and 3.78 yellows a game across 27 matches in the window, six of them this season. The model has Hull City at 9.2 fouls and Brentford at 10.7, 19.9 between them, so the referee's own average is 2.6 fouls above the fixture projection before form comes into it.

And both sides are outrunning the model. Hull's last five read 17, 12, 10, 15 and 11 for 13.0 against a projection of 9.2, 3.8 clear, and Brentford's read 13, 11, 10, 24 and 7 for 13.0 against 10.7. One honest wrinkle: Brentford's 24 came at Aston Villa and does most of that work, because the other four average 10.3, close to their own number. Hull are the cleaner half, and the only Premier League fixture on this card where both teams are above their projection by more than two fouls a game. The match page has the details.

Fabio Maresca: Lecce v Juventus (Sun, 5pm UK)

Fabio Maresca is the third-heaviest whistle on the board by both measures: 26.4 fouls and 4.73 yellows a game over 15 matches in the window, three of them this season. Fifteen matches is the minimum we'll lead on, so he only just qualifies. The model gives Lecce 10.9 fouls and Juventus 13.2, 24.1 between them, and Maresca sits 2.3 above that.

Lecce are the live half. Their last five read 13, 14, 15, 17 and 11 for 14.0 against a projection of 10.9, 3.1 clear, with all five above their number, if only just in the latest. Juventus run the other way: 10, 8, 19, 8 and 14 for 11.8 against 13.2. The whistle and the fixture line up, and the team layer is half there with Lecce up and Juventus down, so this is a slightly smaller angle than the two above it. The match page has the rest.

Loud whistles that miss the lead

Andrea Colombo owns the biggest fouls average on the board, 27.6 a game over 16 matches, and he has Napoli v Roma on Saturday (5pm UK). The teams won't back him up: Napoli's last five average 9.0 against a projection of 11.3, and Roma's 11.4 against 12.9, both under their number.

Mathieu Vernice is next on 26.9 from 19 matches, with Lens v Paris FC on Saturday (7:45pm UK), and Paris FC are fouling 2.9 above projection, 12, 19, 17, 13 and 13 for 14.8 against 11.9. It's a genuine overlap, but we don't price player fouls in Ligue 1, so there's nowhere to take it.

The widest team gap on the board is in the Bundesliga. Bayer 04 Leverkusen's last five read 14, 10, 16, 12 and 21 for 14.6 against a projection of 8.7, 5.9 over, and TSG Hoffenheim's read 14, 11, 18, 13 and 20 for 15.2 against 11.9. Daniel Siebert takes the game on Sunday (2:30pm UK) and he's the quiet part: 21.6 fouls and 3.21 yellows over 19 matches, a little under the board average of 22.6. The teams make the case here, not the referee.

Big averages on tiny samples: Parsons, Muñiz Muñoz and Kubler

Thomas Parsons has Lincoln City v Burnley on Saturday (3pm UK) at 25.5 fouls and 5.5 yellows a game, from 4 matches. Carlos Muñiz Muñoz has Deportivo Alavés v Málaga on Friday night (8pm UK) at 26.0 fouls and 3.75 yellows from 4. Geoffrey Kubler has Toulouse v Troyes on Sunday (4:15pm UK) at 27.0 fouls from 2 matches.

Five and a half yellows a game is an eye-catching number, and it's exactly the kind that halves as the sample grows. Four matches can't tell us how a referee works, so none of them gets a section of its own.

How to actually bet a referee angle

The limit first: we don't carry match-total fouls lines in our odds feeds, so you won't see a price or a line on total match fouls from us. If your bookmaker offers that market, everything above is homework to take to it, and the number is yours to check. What we do price every day is the player fouls market, and that's where a referee read becomes a bet. A busy whistle lifts every individual line in the game, and it lifts hardest for players who already commit fouls in volume.

On this card, Oliver McBurnie of Hull and Mamadou Sangaré of Brentford have each committed a foul in seven straight league games, both 1.28 with Ladbrokes at the time of writing. Ethan Ampadu of Leeds has fouled in each of his last five, 1.17 with bet365, and Danilo Veiga has fouled in seven straight for Lecce, 1.17 with bet365. Team sheets arrive about an hour before kick-off, and a player who doesn't start doesn't count.

The fouls bet builder turns the day's strongest foul lines into a slip, the player fouls guide covers who actually accumulates them, and the yellow cards bet builder does the same on the bookings side. Every official we track, with the fouls, cards and matches behind each average, is on the referee hub, with boards for the Premier League, Serie A and Bundesliga.
