Manchester Derby Betting Preview: Three Bet Builders from the Player Props Board

Old Trafford, half four, and a derby the numbers make closer than the table does. Both clubs have scored exactly seven goals in three league games. Both rank first in the division for shots on target. The separation is entirely at the back, and even there it is more complicated than the goals column suggests.

This is the detailed betting read: where the market is ahead of our model, where it is behind, and three bet builders drawn from the player props board. The straight match preview, with team news and the full projections, is here.

The market read: one side only

Start with what the model will not back. Manchester City at 2.10 is rated 42.3 percent against a price implying 45.5 - three points the wrong way. Both teams to score at 1.44 is rated 62 against an implied 64.6. Over 2.5 goals at 1.53 is 60.1 against 62. Three of the four headline markets are priced ahead of our number.

The exception is the home side. Manchester United at 3.25 is 32.9 percent by the model against a fair 29.4 - the only main-market selection in this fixture we rate as value, and the one our Premier League predictions column has taken for Gameweek 4.

The case is in the defensive numbers rather than the narrative. Manchester United have conceded six goals from 2.94 expected goals against; Manchester City two from 1.91. One of those is a defence being punished beyond what it has allowed, the other is a defence being flattered - and our Premier League xG table has the full picture. The current shape of both squads sits on the power rankings.

Bet Builder 1: The value builder - 9/2

Three legs, three players our model rates above their price, and - importantly today - three players our predicted XI has starting rather than rotating.

  • Luke Shaw 1+ fouls committed at 1.44 - 72 percent against an implied 69, with a four-foul game inside his last five.
  • Enzo Fernandez 1+ shots at 1.13 - 89 percent, and the only shots line in the fixture the model rates above its price rather than below.
  • Abdukodir Khusanov to be booked at 3.40 - 30 percent against an implied 29, and a centre-back likely to spend the afternoon dealing with Manchester United runners.

Around 9/2 combined. It is the builder we would put a full stake behind: no leg depends on a rotation call, and each one is a market where our number beats the price rather than chases it.

Bet Builder 2: The cards double - 14/1

For the bold end of the board, the two card-market edges that do not rely on a squad-rotation guess:

  • Elliot Anderson to be booked at 4.50 - 27 percent against an implied 22.
  • Abdukodir Khusanov to be booked at 3.40 - 30 percent against an implied 29.

Around 14/1 the double. One caveat that cuts in our favour: our bookings projections do not yet account for the referee, a gap we wrote up in this week's Referee Watch. The market lifts a whole card board for a strict official and our model does not, so on a card-heavy whistle both numbers are conservative. Check the Premier League referees table for the appointment first.

Bet Builder 3: The one to land - 10/11

Not a value bet, and we will say so plainly: the shots markets in this derby are priced tight and our model rates most of them slightly below the price. But if you want a builder with a realistic chance of landing rather than a big number, this is the shape.

  • Erling Haaland 2+ shots at 1.11 - 88 percent, four or more shots in four of his last five.
  • Matheus Cunha 2+ shots at 1.33 - 71 percent, a shot in all five of his last five.
  • Bruno Fernandes 2+ shots at 1.30 - 70 percent, including an eight-shot game.

Around 10/11. Three players who shoot every week, in a game both sides will attack.

The biggest edge on the board, and why we have not built on it

Worth publishing rather than hiding: the three largest gaps between our model and the bookmaker in this fixture all belong to one player, Patrick Dorgu. To be fouled at 1.44 against an implied 69 percent. To commit a foul at 1.53. To be booked at 4.75 against an implied 21. On the numbers alone he would be the whole article.

We have left him out of all three builders because the numbers are not the whole picture. Our predicted XI has him starting, but his recent record does not support leaning on that: two of his last three Manchester United appearances came off the bench, for twenty minutes and ten. A model edge on a player who might play the last quarter of an hour is not an edge you can bank.

If the team sheet at half three has him starting, those three lines are the best prices in the match and we would say so. Until then they stay off the slips. It is also the reason the void rule matters on player props: a named player who does not start takes his leg out of the bet rather than losing it, which is exactly how our Champions League fouls slip settled as a five-fold at 13/1 on Wednesday.

Elsewhere on the board: Elliot Anderson tops the fouls-drawn market at 83 percent, and season numbers for every player named here are on the Premier League player stats page. Today's other slips are on the Daily Acca and Bet Builder Tips pages, and yesterday's two fouls four-folds are written up in Saturday Bet Builders.

The honest bit

These are builders, not certainties, and two of the three above are longshots by construction. Every projection quoted is the model's genuine number rather than a sales line, and where the market is ahead of us - City, both teams to score, the goals line - this piece says so rather than finding a way to recommend them anyway. Lineups are predicted rather than confirmed at the time of writing, so check team news before kick-off: a player who does not start takes his leg out of the bet. Prices are bet365, correct at the time of writing. 18+. Please gamble responsibly - begambleaware.org.
