Manchester United host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday 13 September, kickoff 16:30 UK, and the first Manchester derby of the season arrives with both clubs carrying the same headline number and two very different stories behind it.
Each side has scored seven goals in three Premier League games, 2.33 per game, joint-third in the division, and each is ranked first of 20 for shots on target at 6.33 per game. The split is at the other end: Manchester City have conceded twice, Manchester United six times, and the underlying numbers say only one of those is a real defence. Live projections and form sit on the Statz match centre.
Manchester United arrive off a 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah, a 2-2 draw at Everton, a 5-2 home win over Ipswich Town and a 2-0 defeat at Hull City. That Hull result is the one to hold on to: United lost it while winning the expected goals 2.19 to 0.99.
Across three league games United have generated 7.45 xG and conceded 2.94, yet the scoreline column reads seven scored and six conceded. Six goals against from under three xG against is not a defensive system, it is a run of finishing they had no control over. No clean sheet in three, 14th of 20, and 2.00 goals conceded per game, 16th.
Manchester City won 2-0 at Porto in midweek and have won all three league games, nine points from nine to United's four: 2-1 against AFC Bournemouth, 4-1 at Crystal Palace, then 1-0 at home to Coventry City. That Coventry win reads 1.88 xG to 0.75 in the current import, controlled rather than overwhelming, and it is the pattern of the whole start. City have conceded 1.91 xG and two actual goals, 0.67 per game, third best in the division.
Neither XI is confirmed. The predicted teams have Senne Lammens behind Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans in midfield, and Gianluigi Donnarumma behind Ruben Dias for City, with Elliot Anderson holding and Erling Haaland leading the line. Check team news before kick-off.
Both clubs' current shape is ranked against the rest of the division on the Premier League power rankings.
The Statz model makes Manchester City 42.4% to win, Manchester United 32.9%, with the remaining 24.7% on the draw. Projected goals are 1.66 to 1.44 in City's favour, on 14.20 shots to 13.81 and 5.11 corners to 4.58.
Against the board, the model sits a shade under the market almost everywhere. City at 2.10 implies a fair 45.5%, so the model is 3.1 points below the price. Both teams to score at 1.44 implies 64.6% against a model reading of 61.9%. Over 2.5 goals at 1.53 implies 62.0% against 60.1%.
One selection goes the other way. Manchester United at 3.25 implies a fair 29.4% and the model has them at 32.9%, 3.5 points above the price. That is the honest headline here: the model does not rate City at 2.10, and the only side of the result it puts above the market is the home win.
Our Champions League guide has City at 10.00 for that competition and United at 21.00, outsiders of the English five, though it is Arsenal, not City, whose league-phase draw the guide rates the hardest.

Michael Oliver referees, and he has worked four games this season at 27.5 fouls and 4.25 yellow cards per game, no reds. That matters because Manchester United foul less than every side but one, 9.0 per game, 19th of 20, and the model still projects 10.14 fouls for them here against 9.24 for City.
The fouls board is where the model and the market disagree most. Prices below were the model's numbers at the time of writing, and each assumes the player starts.
The attacking streaks are priced tight: Erling Haaland has hit a shot on target in three straight games, and Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha have both cleared 2+ shots in three straight. The live slip below prices those fresh. More fouls angles across the card sit on Bet Builder of the Day: Fouls, and the round's full model board is on the daily acca sheet.

The model's call: Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City.
That is the lean the numbers produce, not a promise. City are projected for 1.66 goals to 1.44, they are the 42.4% side, and their defensive record is backed by the underlying numbers in a way United's is not.
The caveat sits in the same model. United at 3.25 is the one selection it rates above the market, and a home side creating 2.48 xG per league game does not need much to go right. Over 2.5 goals lands at 60.1%, so a quiet derby is what the model expects least.
