Corner Betting Explained: Spurs, Fulham and Man Utd Win the Most Corners and Sit 14th to 16th

The three clubs winning the most corners in the Premier League are Tottenham, Fulham and Manchester United, on 6.5, 6.1 and 6.0 a game after eight matches each. At the time of writing they're 14th, 15th and 16th in the table, with 24 points between them. Manchester City and Arsenal, level on 21 points at the top, are fourth and joint fifth for corners won.

That's worth knowing before you look at a corner line. Corners show who's been pushing, and the table hasn't been paying for it. Here's what the lines mean, how often Premier League games have cleared them this season, who sits at the extremes and how to read the corner projection on a match page, with this weekend's fixtures as the examples.

Over 9.5 means ten or more, and under 11.5 means eleven or fewer

Corner lines end in .5 so the total can't land on them. Over 9.5 corners means the two teams between them win 10 or more in the match; under 9.5 means nine or fewer. Under 11.5 means 11 or fewer, and over 11.5 means 12 or more. Both sides' corners are added together, and each bookmaker's rules say exactly which corners count, so read them.

A team line does the same job for one side. Tottenham over 5.5 corners means Tottenham alone win six or more, whatever their opponents manage. A first-half line counts only the corners before half-time. There are side markets too, such as which team wins more corners and which gets to a set number first, and our corner betting guide covers them.

Three games in four finish under 11.5

The 80 Premier League matches played so far have produced 755 corners, an average of 9.44 a match. The middle game had nine, and the range runs from three corners to 17. This is how often each line has been cleared.

Under 11.5 has landed in 60 of the 80 games, 75%, and over 9.5 in 37, 46%. The first half averages 4.6 corners, 49% of the total, and 43 of the 80 first halves have had five or more. In 52 of the 160 club performances a side reached six or more corners, and in 31 it reached seven or more. The Premier League corners table has every club's hit rates.

The Premier League is the second-quietest of the big five

Take the same line to another league and it means something different. The Bundesliga averages 10.65 corners a match, more than a full corner above the Premier League's 9.44, and La Liga and Serie A are both a little above it. Only Ligue 1 is lower. The Championship runs at 10.53 over 144 matches.

The corner kings are in the bottom half

Tottenham have won 52 corners in eight matches and conceded 35. Fulham are on 49 and 34, United on 48 and 29. United's +19 is the best corner difference in the league, then Tottenham's +17 and Fulham's +15, ahead of Arsenal on +14 and City on +13.

The table hasn't paid them for it. Their expected points are 12.2 for United, 11.9 for Fulham and 10.7 for Tottenham, 34.8 between them against the 24 they've got, and our power rankings have them seventh, ninth and 13th. United have had 155 shots, the most anyone has. Last week we looked at the gap between United's points and their chances over the longer run.

At the other end, Ipswich have won 2.9 corners a game, Aston Villa 3.3 and Crystal Palace 3.6. The five clubs who win the fewest corners are exactly the five with the fewest shots: Ipswich (84), Coventry (85), Hull (86), Palace (88) and Villa (91). Higher up the link loosens. Nottingham Forest have had 137 shots, the third most, and are tenth for corners won with 38.

Corners and chances aren't the same thing either. Tottenham's 52 have come with 8.25 expected goals, and City's 46 with 16.67. The corner count says how often a defence turned the ball behind; the xG table says how good the chances were.

Chelsea's games are the busiest, Ipswich's the quietest

A match-total line cares about both sides at once. Chelsea games average 11.1 corners, the most in the league, built from 45 won and 44 conceded. Everton and Tottenham are next on 10.9. Hull concede 6.5 a game, the most in the league, and Everton 6.0.

The quiet end belongs to Ipswich on 7.6 and Villa on 7.9, with Leeds on 8.3 and Sunderland on 8.5. Only one of Ipswich's eight games and one of Villa's have reached 12 corners.

Home advantage is barely there, and the side that's losing wins the corners

The home side in the 80 matches has won 384 corners, 4.80 a game, against 371 for the away side, 4.64. The home side won more corners in 38 games, the away side in 36, and six were level. Individual clubs swing more: Arsenal win 6.75 a game at home and 4.5 away, Palace 5.0 and 2.25, although that's four home and four away games each.

Possession doesn't tell the whole story either. Chelsea win 5.6 corners a game with 46% of the ball, the same as Arsenal with 61%, according to our corners guide. Some sides concede in bunches away from home: Everton have conceded 34 corners in four away games, 8.5 a game, against 3.5 a game at home. Their away matches have averaged 14.0 corners in total and their home matches 7.75.

Then there's game state. The team that loses tends to win the corners: in the 57 games with a winner, the losing side won more corners in 31 and the winning side in 22, with four level. Winners averaged 4.5 and losers 4.9. A line is set before anyone scores, so a team that goes ahead and sits back can finish with a lot of corners against.

What the match pages say about this weekend

Every Premier League match page carries a corner projection for each side, plus our chance of the game reaching the lines around that total. All ten fixtures this weekend have one, starting with Chelsea v Manchester United on Saturday lunchtime. These are the eight that show the range.

Tottenham v Crystal Palace has the highest total, 10.36, and it follows the season numbers: Tottenham win 6.5 a game and Palace concede 5.5. Liverpool v Arsenal is almost level at 4.81 to 4.79, with Arsenal conceding the second-fewest corners in the league at 3.9 a game and Liverpool 4.1. Chelsea v Manchester United sets the club whose games have the most corners against the one that concedes the fewest, and the page has Chelsea on 5.44 and United on 4.35.

The projection moves with the opponent. Ipswich have won 2.9 corners a game, and the page for Hull v Ipswich has them on 4.71 at Hull, who concede 6.5. Newcastle v Everton on Monday night is the other game above 10, with Everton's away matches averaging 14.0 corners.

Put the total next to the line you're looking at, then see what else the Player Props board shows. Its Team Markets view lists match and team corner lines next to our projected number, the match simulator runs corner over and unders alongside goals, and the corners bet builder of the day picks out the matches the projections expect to be corner-heavy. None of it tells you what will happen. It shows where our numbers sit against a line, and the fixtures page has the rest of the weekend.
