Updated 9 October 2026.
Charlton Athletic host Bristol City at The Valley on Saturday 10 October, kick-off 12:30 UK, and the two sides are separated by a single place and a single point in the Championship. Charlton sit 9th on 12 points, Bristol City 8th on 13, but they have got there in very different ways: the home side have been tight and low-scoring, the visitors open and high-scoring.
Charlton have scored only seven times in eight league games, while Bristol City have scored 11, and that gap is what this preview comes back to.
Charlton have drawn three of their last five, and their last two home games were both 0-0, against Portsmouth and QPR. They then lost 3-1 at Cardiff last time out, and before that 4-0 at Stoke. The one point away from home in that run came in a 1-1 draw at West Brom.
The strength is at the back. Charlton have the 5th fewest goals conceded per game and the 3rd highest clean-sheet rate in the division, at 38%. The problem is at the other end: they average 0.88 goals a game, the 4th fewest, and the fewest shots on target of anyone, at 2.63 a game.
Bristol City arrive in mixed form: three wins and two defeats from their last five. They beat Watford 1-0 last time out, after a 1-0 home defeat to Lincoln and a 4-1 loss at Southampton. Before that they won 2-1 at Burnley and 3-1 at Preston.
They score and concede in roughly equal measure, 1.38 for and 1.5 against a game. Both teams have scored in 63% of their matches and over 2.5 goals has landed in 63%. They average 4.63 shots on target a game, the 9th most in the league.
Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Okonkwo; McNamara, Jones, Mesik; Coventry, Alli; Campbell, Grant, Leaburn
Bristol City possible starting lineup:
Tickle; Tanner, Atkinson, Eile, Cardines; Randell, Williams, Knight; Wallace, Ballard
Tyreece Campbell is Charlton's most reliable outlet, with a shot in each of his eight league games this season and 1.6 a game. He is 1.11 at Ladbrokes to make it nine.
Conor Coventry has made at least one tackle in all eight games, averaging 1.9, and has committed at least one foul in each of his last five, averaging 2.6. Midnite have him at 1.22 for a foul.
Ivan Mesik has a tackle in seven straight, at 2.1 a game, and gives Charlton's back line its edge.
For Bristol City, striker Lorent Tolaj has at least one foul in eight straight games, at 2.3 a game, and has had three or more shots in each of his last five, averaging four. That shot run is 1.62 at bet365.
Jason Knight has committed a foul in seven games in a row and is 1.40 at Midnite to make it eight. Rob Dickie is the centre-back worth a look for a shot: he has had one in six straight, and our model rates him likelier than the 1.73 price suggests.
We make Bristol City the narrow favourites at 37% to win, with Charlton on 33% and the draw on 30%. Coral have Bristol City at 2.30, Charlton are 3.20 at bet365 and the draw is 3.30 at Ladbrokes.
| Market | Best price | Statz chance |
|---|---|---|
| Charlton Athletic win | 3.20 (bet365) | 33% |
| Draw | 3.30 (Ladbrokes) | 30% |
| Bristol City win | 2.30 (Coral) | 37% |
| Both teams to score | 1.83 (bet365) | 49% |
| Over 1.5 goals | 1.36 (Midnite) | 69% |
| Over 2.5 goals | 2.10 (bet365) | 42% |
Our prediction is a 1-1 draw, though we make Bristol City slightly more likely to win. That reflects a Charlton attack that struggles to create chances against a Bristol City side that concedes in most of its games. We project 1.14 goals for Charlton and 1.23 for Bristol City, and Bristol City keep a clean sheet only about a third of the time.
Referee Tom Reeves takes charge, and fouls have been plentiful in his three games this season, which suits the foul-based runs of Coventry, Knight and Tolaj. For a combined angle, Coventry for a foul, Joe Williams for a shot and Knight for a foul come out at 2.27.
Kick-off at The Valley is 12:30 UK on Saturday 10 October 2026.
We predict a 1-1 draw, though Bristol City are slightly more likely to win than Charlton.
