A player's shots created total is the cumulative sum of his key passes and his assists across the match - Paddy Power also counts fantasy assists, its slightly wider assist definition, towards the total. A key pass is the final touch that sends a teammate through to attempt a shot that does not produce a goal. The pass has to arrive cleanly: if a defender gets an intervening touch between the pass and the shot, no key pass is awarded.
Assists are treated a little more generously. A pass still counts as an assist when the ball takes a deflection on its way, provided it reaches the goalscorer. But there is no assist - and so no shot created - for an own goal, or for a goal scored directly from a free kick or a corner. And a player can never create a shot for himself: beating three men and shooting adds nothing to a shots created line.
Settlement runs on official Opta data, so the bookmaker's count is final even where another data feed disagrees by a touch. Only the 90 minutes plus injury time count - extra time and penalty shoot-outs are excluded - and a player who takes no part in the match has his bets voided.
