Pepper was bowled for 52 off 34 (five fours, three sixes, SR 153) to break the stand, and Essex wobbled badly. Matthew Critchley fell for 4 at 116/3, Walter was caught by a substitute fielder for 58 off 37 (six fours, two sixes, SR 157) at 122/3, and Wiaan Mulder managed just 2 before departing at 134/5.
