Crystal Palace's Tyrick Mitchell tops the list and it is not close: 135 points, 3,253 minutes and 12 clean sheets last season — returns that embarrass defenders costing £2m more — yet he sits in just 7.4% of drafts. Brighton's Ferdi Kadıoğlu (118 points, 10 clean sheets) and Aston Villa's Matty Cash (117 points, plus three goals) complete a podium of full-backs who barely missed a minute.
The crowd's actual pick in this band is Luke Shaw — 113 points and 20.4% ownership, the highest of any cheap defender. The points gap between Shaw and Mitchell is 22 in Mitchell's favour, at less than half the ownership: if you want the differential version of the same price tag, the data says Palace's man is the buy.
Since defensive contribution started paying FPL points, high-volume defenders earn even when the clean sheet goes. Leeds' Joe Rodon racked up a remarkable 274 defensive contributions last season — the most of any player in this price band — with Mitchell (245), Brighton's Lewis Dunk (231), Everton's Vitaliy Mykolenko (231) and Shaw (224) behind him. Brentford's Michael Kayode (113 points, 219 DC) and Sunderland's Trai Hume (110 points in 3,032 minutes, 1.3% owned) round out a band where the floor, not just the ceiling, pays for itself.
One more name worth a flag: Villa's Lucas Digne scored 97 points in only 1,842 minutes thanks to seven assists — the best per-minute attacking output in the band, with the rotation risk priced in.
Below £4.5m the evidence thins out fast. The crowd's £4.0m picks are Ipswich's Issa Diop (21.3% owned, 31 points last season) and Coventry's Milan van Ewijk (17% owned, zero Premier League points — he simply wasn't in the league).
