FedEx St. Jude Championship 2026 Review: How Scottie Scheffler Won at TPC Southwind
Updated 18 August 2026
Scottie Scheffler won the FedExCup Playoffs opener by eight shots. He signed for 263 at TPC Southwind, 17 under par, and collected $3,600,000 from the $20m purse. No PGA Tour event this season has been won by a wider margin: across the 35 completed tournaments of 2026, the next biggest is Justin Rose's seven shots at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Si Woo Kim was second alone on nine under. Alex Noren and Sam Burns shared third on eight under, with Sungjae Im and Wyndham Clark a shot further back.
How it was won
Scheffler's card read 68-61-68-66. The middle number is the tournament. Friday's 61 was built from 11 birdies, five pars and two bogeys, and it was worth 8.54 strokes gained on the field, the best single round anyone played all week. He led the field that day in both approach (+3.48) and putting (+3.87), hit 77.8 per cent of his greens and took 1.29 putts per green in regulation, the lowest figure in the field.
Over four rounds he gained 16.36 strokes, almost exactly double Kim's 8.36. The category split is the surprising part. Putting was his best department, +8.92 and first in the field, with approach second at +6.64 and off the tee 11th at +2.25. Around the green he ranked 56th in the field and lost 1.45 strokes, and it never cost him a thing, because he hit 76.39 per cent of greens in regulation, the best mark in the field. You do not need a short game if you are never short-sided.
The scorecard was close to spotless: 23 birdies, 43 pars and six bogeys in 72 holes, with no eagles and no doubles. Sunday's 66 was the second-best round of the day by strokes gained (+4.56), which matters, because it means the eight-shot margin was not a case of the field falling over on him. He was clear overnight and he extended it.
Did TPC Southwind play to type?
In Tuesday's betting preview we published the venue's demand profile: approach 36.0 per cent of the separation, putting 27.8, off the tee 24.5 and around the green 11.7, with the recent top tens averaging +0.70 on approach and +0.54 putting per round. Here is that profile marked against what the 11 players who finished inside the top 10 actually produced.
| Category | Demand weight | Top-10 SG we projected | Top-10 SG actual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approach | 36.0% | +0.70 | +0.96 |
| Putting | 27.8% | +0.54 | +0.37 |
| Off the tee | 24.5% | +0.48 | +0.41 |
| Around the green | 11.7% | +0.23 | +0.06 |
The approach call was right and, if anything, we undersold it. Iron play separated this leaderboard by more than our profile expected, and the leaderboard is littered with the evidence. Noren led the entire field in approach at +7.00 and tied for third. Burns gained 6.42 on approach, third-best in the field, while losing 3.64 strokes off the tee, which ranked him 63rd in the field, and he still tied for third. Kim was fifth in approach and fifth off the tee with a putter that lost him half a stroke for the week, and finished second.
Where we were generous was the short stuff. Around the green we projected +0.23 for the top 10 and the actual number was +0.06, essentially nothing, and putting came in more than a sixth of a stroke per round under our figure. The caveat is the champion: Scheffler's +8.92 on the greens was the single largest category edge anyone produced all week. Putting did not separate the top 10 as a group, but it is what turned a good week into a rout.
Our projected winning score was 16 under, against a three-edition historic average of 15.75 under. The actual answer was 17 under. That is as close as this exercise gets.
How our picks went
Three selections, eight points staked, and the one that mattered landed.
- Scottie Scheffler, 3pts win at 5/1: WON. Returned 18pts for a profit of +15pts. We called it the largest single edge on any Statz board this season, 27.4 per cent model win chance against a price implying 16.7, and it is now the largest winning margin of the season too.
- Hideki Matsuyama, 1.5pts each-way at 22/1: T7, no return, -3pts. The ball-striking case was sound and then some. He was fourth in the field on approach (+5.86) and sixth off the tee (+3.62). What beat him was everything inside 30 yards: 58th around the green and 52nd in putting, losing 4.12 strokes between them. Tee to green he was a contender; he could not hole a putt.
- Kurt Kitayama, 1pt each-way at 60/1: T12, no return, -2pts. Our stated worry was his iron play. It never bit, in fact he gained 2.11 on approach and ranked 21st. He simply had no standout category, gained 4.36 for the week and drifted round in the pack.
Eight points staked, 18 returned: +10pts for the week. That takes the Statz tipster record to +55.51 points from 14 settled events, a return on investment of 49.56 per cent from 55 settled picks, with two winners, nine placed and a 20 per cent strike rate. The tracker settles every each-way bet at six places, a fifth of the odds, with dead-heat reductions applied. Matsuyama's share of seventh missed the places under those terms and under the bet365 terms we quoted.
One more line from Tuesday deserves settling. We left Michael Brennan off the card at 55/1 despite a positive edge and the best course-setup score in the field, on the grounds that back-to-back PGA Tour wins are rare and the price did not pay for asking. He finished T42 on one over. That one went our way.
What it means
Scheffler now leads the Statz Rankings by a distance: +2.76 strokes per round on our recency-weighted, field-adjusted measure of the last 100 rounds, more than a full stroke clear of Tommy Fleetwood in second (+1.67). He also tops the FedExCup standings on 4,873 points from Matt Fitzpatrick on 3,426. Kim's runner-up week lifts him to sixth in the Statz index and fourth in the standings.
Our power rankings had a strong week and one bad miss. Eight of the ten names finished inside the top 25, including Kim at number six finishing second, Burns at nine tying for third and Clark at four tying for fifth. The miss was Rory McIlroy, ranked tenth and 66th on eight over, with J.J. Spaun at eight tying for 34th.
The name we got wrong was the one we flagged. We buried Xander Schauffele at 23rd in the Power Index on cold last-24 splits and said openly that our model disagreed. He tied for seventh, and the trending data now has him as the second-hottest player on Tour, up 3.53 strokes per round on his previous eight. The player above him on that list is Noren, up 3.98, who duly tied for third. Recent-eight form was the sharper signal at Southwind than the 24-round window we leaned on.
Next is the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, 20-23 August: another $20m, another par 70, this one stretching to 7,448 yards.
