Super Sub Report: The 88 Lines Substitute Pairs Reached in Gameweek 3

Wilson Isidor played 26 minutes at Brentford on Saturday and produced two shots, one of them on target, and two fouls. The man he replaced, Nilson Angulo, had come off after 64 minutes with a single tackle to his name. Between them the pair's totals reached five separate prop thresholds that Angulo's numbers alone had not - the biggest single cameo of the round, in a weekend when substitutes kept doing this everywhere.

This is the weekly Super Sub Report: what every substituted player and his replacement produced between them in fouls, shots, shots on target and tackles. Under sub-on-play-on rules the replacement's output continues the line, so the pair's combined figure is the one that matters on those markets - the full mechanics are in our explainer.

The round in numbers

All ten Gameweek 3 games are analysed, covering 87 substitutions. At the time of writing, 88 times a pair's combined total reached a threshold the starter alone had not - 80 of them from lines where the starter was exactly one short. The season count after three rounds stands at 257 across 30 fixtures.

Where the help landed, as a share of one-short situations that the pair went on to clear: 2+ fouls 41% (16 cleared, the most of any line), 2+ shots 39%, 3+ tackles 33%, 1+ fouls 33%, 2+ tackles 31% - and at the other end, 1+ shots on target 16% and 2+ shots on target 13%. The season-long pattern held again: fouls and tackles accumulate in cameos, shots on target mostly do not.

The five that mattered most

  • Isidor for Angulo (Brentford 1-1 Sunderland): off with 1 tackle on 64, the pair finished on 2 shots, 1 on target, 2 fouls - five thresholds reached, and Sunderland's bench was the story of the round: Trai Hume's 26 minutes cleared three more on the tackles and fouls side.
  • Yarmolyuk for Sangare (same game, Brentford's side): Mamadou Sangare went off at half time on 2 shots and 3 fouls; Yegor Yarmolyuk added a shot, a tackle and two fouls across the second half.
  • Ramsey for Miley (Newcastle 2-2 Bournemouth): Lewis Miley off on 1 foul; Jacob Ramsey's 27 minutes added a shot on target and two fouls - four thresholds, entirely his own work.
  • Zubimendi for Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea): Myles Lewis-Skelly went off on five fouls; Martin Zubimendi added three more of his own plus a shot. Eight pair fouls in one shirt slot.
  • Gusto for Lavia (same game, Chelsea): Romeo Lavia off on 1 tackle after an hour; Malo Gusto's two tackles took the pair to 3 - the quiet, typical case that makes up most of the 88.

The cameos that needed no help

Substitutes who reached lines on their own numbers, ignoring the man they replaced: Isidor (five lines, 26 minutes), Ramsey (four, 27), Zian Flemming (three in 24 minutes of Ipswich 0-2 Liverpool), Hume (three, 26) and Promise David, whose 13 minutes against Leeds included a shot and two fouls.

What to take into Gameweek 4

The standing lessons did not move: the pair effect is largest on fouls and tackles, meaningful on raw shots, and weakest on shots on target; midfielders and full-backs substituted around the hour are where the arithmetic lives; and a starter one short at the 60th minute is not the end of the story on pair-continuing markets. Small print

Counts are thresholds reached in the match data, not bet settlements: we cannot see which lines were offered, backed, or how any bet settled, and stat-provider corrections can nudge these numbers for days - figures are as imported at the time of writing. 18+.
