Rocket Classic 2026 Review: How Michael Thorbjornsen Won at Detroit Golf Club

The Rocket Classic is not usually won from four shots back by a player nobody was talking about on Saturday night. Michael Thorbjornsen managed it at Detroit Golf Club, closing with a seven-under 63 to finish on 262, 18 under par, two clear of Xander Schauffele. It is the first PGA Tour title of his career, worth $1,800,000 from the $10,000,000 purse, and it arrived at the one venue where he already had form: he was fourth here in 2025.

How it was won

Thorbjornsen's card read 69-64-66-63, and the shape of it matters. He opened with a one-under 69 that left him tied 70th of 147, then gained ground in every round after it. By Sunday morning he was 11 under, tied seventh, four adrift of Davis Riley.

Across the four days he gained 14.8 strokes on the field, the best total of anyone in the tournament. What stands out is how evenly it was spread: 5.3 off the tee (fourth in the field), 3.9 putting, 3.7 on approach and 2.0 around the green. No single category carried him: there was no hot putting week to explain away and no bombing display either, at 318.3 yards off the tee and 73.2 per cent of fairways hit.

The number that best explains the win is greens in regulation. Thorbjornsen hit 87.5 per cent of them, the highest rate of any player in the field, and made 23 birdies against just five bogeys, with no eagles and no doubles all week.

Sunday was the separation. He gained 7.1 strokes in the final round alone, the best round of the day, driven by 3.4 on approach and a 94.4 per cent greens-in-regulation rate. Seven birdies, no bogeys. Meanwhile the 54-hole leaderboard froze: Riley shot level-par 70, Michael Brennan went round in 73, and Rickie Fowler, Chris Kirk and Cameron Young all signed for 70. Only Schauffele, who closed in 65 to take second on 264, went with him.

Riley finished third on 265 after gaining 8.6 strokes on the greens, the second-best putting week in the field. Rasmus Højgaard produced the round of the tournament on Saturday, a nine-under 61 of nine birdies and no bogeys that lifted him from three under at halfway to a share of third with a round to play. He finished fourth on 266.

Did Detroit play to type?

In our preview we published a demand profile for Detroit Golf Club built from seven previous editions: putting 38.5 per cent of the separation, approach 35.4, off the tee 13.8 and around the green 12.3. Putting and approach together, we said, were 73.9 per cent of what decides this tournament, with driving the least important skill on the board.

Here is the honest scorecard. Across the 14 players who finished inside the top ten, the actual split of strokes gained came out at putting 36.3 per cent, approach 30.5 per cent, off the tee 23.1 per cent and around the green 10.1 per cent. Putting first and approach second held up. Driving did not: it mattered considerably more than our profile allowed for, 23.1 per cent against a projected 13.8.

The per-round averages tell the same story. Top-ten finishers gained 0.92 strokes putting and 0.77 on approach, both close to the historic marks of +0.99 and +0.91 we quoted. Off the tee they gained 0.58, well up on the +0.35 historic figure, and they averaged 310.8 yards against a historic top-ten average of 303.1. Greens in regulation came in at 75.0 per cent versus 78.8 historically, scrambling at 68.7 per cent versus 74.6. A slightly more demanding, slightly longer week than the archive suggested, and the winner drove it well.

Scoring bears it out too. We projected a winning score of 22 under and a cut around five under; the winner came in at 18 under and the cut fell at three, with a dozen players missing on two under. Detroit was still a birdie course, just not the free-for-all the record book promised.

How our picks went

Badly, and there is no way to dress it up. All four selections lost, for a total of minus 8 points on the week.

• Chris Gotterup 18/1, 1.5pt each-way: missed the cut. Our headline pick and the model's biggest edge on the board. He shot 141 to miss by four, undone by the venue's biggest demand: he lost 2.9 strokes putting over two rounds while gaining 2.5 off the tee. The preview's caveat, that we were backing form and a pricing error rather than a stylistic fit, was the whole story. Minus 3 points.
• Si Woo Kim 20/1, 1pt each-way: tied 42nd. The thesis half worked. He gained 3.6 strokes on approach, 16th in the field, exactly as advertised, then lost 3.0 on the greens at a venue where putting is the primary skill. Minus 2 points.
• Russell Henley 25/1, 1pt each-way: tied 20th. The most frustrating of the four. Henley led the entire field in putting, gaining 8.9 strokes on the greens, and added 1.5 on approach. He still only managed 20th because he lost 4.0 around the green, 69th of the 73 who made the weekend. The purest course fit in the field did the two things we asked and was undone by the third. Minus 2 points.
• Chandler Phillips 110/1, 0.5pt each-way: missed the cut. The longshot on a hot hand ran out of it, shooting 141 and losing 4.0 strokes putting. We were open at the time that the model rated him only 33rd, making this a negative-edge play on form. Minus 1 point.

That is 8 points staked and nothing back, a third losing week in a row after the Corales Puntacana Championship and the 3M Open. The full tipster record now reads 12 settled events, 96 points staked, 139.61 returned, for a profit of 43.61 points and a return on investment of 45.43 per cent. One winner and eight places from 48 settled picks is a strike rate of 18.75 per cent. The overall number is still healthy. The last three weeks are not.

Our power rankings, built from public data only, did no better. Its top two, Jackson Koivun and Wyndham Clark, finished 31st and missed the cut respectively. It did have Cameron Young at ten and Davis Thompson at nine, and both shared eighth.

What it means

Thorbjornsen has been building to this. His 2026 already contained a share of third at the WM Phoenix Open, a share of seventh at the Genesis Scottish Open and 16th at the Charles Schwab Challenge, and he now averages 1.53 strokes gained a round over his last 16 rounds, inside the top 25 on Tour on that measure. A step up, not a bolt from nowhere.

For Detroit, the lesson for next year's profile is that the driving weight looks too low. One edition is one edition and we will not rewrite the model on the back of it, but 23 per cent of top-ten separation coming off the tee is a long way from 13.8 and worth watching.

The Tour now heads to Sedgefield Country Club for the Wyndham Championship from 6 to 9 August, the last regular-season event before the play-offs. Our preview and picks land here on Tuesday, with the full model output on the projections pages.
