BMW Championship 2026 Betting Preview - Taking On Scheffler at Bellerive
The FedExCup Playoffs reach their penultimate stage at Bellerive Country Club this week (20-23 August): the top 50 in the standings, no cut, $20m in prize money, and only 30 places in next week's TOUR Championship. The Statz model projects a winning score of 15 under - this is a proper test, not a birdie-fest.
Nobody has played here
Start with the most important thing about this week, because it changes how any preview should be read. The BMW Championship moves venue every year - the last four editions were played at Caves Valley, Castle Pines, Olympia Fields and Wilmington. Bellerive is new to the rotation, and our database holds no previous PGA Tour event at this course.
That means the usual course-history angles are worth very little this week. Any model, ours included, is leaning on event history at four different golf courses when it talks about course fit at Bellerive. We would rather tell you that than pretend to a knowledge nobody has. What we can say is what the event itself demands: across recent editions, approach play carries 37% of the weight and putting 31%, with driving at just 19%. The top tens have averaged +0.77 strokes gained on approach per round. Iron players, in other words - which is exactly how we have built this card.
The elephant in the field
We are not going to pretend otherwise: our model loves Scottie Scheffler this week. It makes him a 43.2% chance against a bet365 price of 14/5 implying 26.3% - a +16.9 point edge, the largest single edge the model has produced this season. It gives him a 91% top-10 probability. He won the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, where he was our 3pt win-only selection at 5/1, and he leads this field in strokes gained over his last 16 rounds.
And we are taking him on. Not because the numbers are wrong, but because 14/5 asks you to be right about one specific outcome in a 50-man field where 49 other players are trying to stop it. Our four selections below are all each-way at 18/1 or bigger. If Scheffler wins again, this card loses and we will say so plainly on Monday. Only two players in the entire field beat their price on our model - Scheffler by a mile, and one other. That other man leads our card.
Selection 1: Sam Burns - 1.5pts EW at 18/1 (bet365)
If the venue is decided by iron play, back the best iron player. Burns ranks 1st in this entire field in strokes gained on approach over his last 16 rounds (+1.19 per round) - the single most relevant number available this week. He is also the only player other than Scheffler with a positive model edge, rated #3 at 5.6% against the 5.3% his price implies, with a 49.5% top-10 projection. The scorecard agrees emphatically: 3rd, 3rd, 12th, 2nd, 20th and 4th in his last six starts. Three top-four finishes in his last four is the form of a man about to win something.
Selection 2: Hideki Matsuyama - 1pt EW at 25/1 (bet365)
Matsuyama was our selection at the St. Jude last week and finished 7th, which returned nothing but signalled plenty. He sits 4th in this field in strokes gained over his last 16 rounds (+2.31 per round) with a 70% recent-form factor, and the model gives him a 32% top-10 chance. The model prices him below 25/1, and its reasoning leans on the course-fit score we have already told you to distrust this week. On current form he is one of the four best players here.
Selection 3: Viktor Hovland - 1pt EW at 25/1 (bet365)
A former champion of this event - Hovland won the BMW in 2023 - with the highest course-fit score of anyone on this card at 88% and 5th place in the field for strokes gained over his last 16 rounds (+2.08). His season has been streaky, a win and a 3rd sitting alongside two missed cuts in his last six starts, but the peaks are exactly the kind this event rewards. At 25/1 each-way in a 50-man field, the volatility is priced in.
The longshot: Kurt Kitayama - 0.5pt EW at 45/1 (bet365)
The biggest price the model can still defend. Kitayama is rated #13 with a 28.9% top-10 projection - higher than several players trading at half his price - and carries an 85% course-setup score. His recent form is the flat spot, ranking 21st in this field over his last 16 rounds, and he has run without reward for us in each of the last two weeks. At 45/1 with places in a 50-man field, we are willing to be patient.

Follow the numbers all week on the BMW Championship hub - projections re-run as the odds move. For a second read on the same field, our BMW Championship power rankings rank the top 10 from public data only, and come out in a different order to the model.
How it finished: Wyndham Clark won at seventeen under, three clear of Patrick Cantlay, and all four picks on this card missed the places for -8pts. Read the full BMW Championship 2026 review, where we settle every selection and mark our own course profile.
