Essex vs Surrey – T20 Blast 2026 Match Report | Statz
Surrey won by 7 runs in the 69th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at County Ground, Chelmsford. In a match that produced 473 runs across 40 overs, Surrey’s 240/4 looked imposing but Essex came within a whisker of hauling it in, falling at 233/8. Reece Topley‘s 3/28 proved the difference in a contest where both attacks took a hammering. Surrey stay 3rd (5W 3L, 20pts) while Essex slip to 9th (4W 4L, 16pts).
First Innings – Surrey Blast 240/4
Essex won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision they would have cause to question. Jason Roy (65 off 38, 6 fours, 3 sixes) and Laurie Evans (40 off 23, 6 fours, 1 six) got Surrey off to a blistering start, putting on 98 for the second wicket before Evans fell in the 9th over.
Josh Philippe (61 not out off 30, 5 fours, 4 sixes) maintained the tempo through the middle overs, while Ollie Pope (59 off 26, 10 fours, 1 six, SR 227) detonated in the death overs before being bowled at 221/3 in the 19th. Daniel Lawrence added a brutal 12 not out off just 3 balls (1 four, 1 six) to close out a mammoth total. Matthew Critchley was Essex’s best bowler with 2/36 from 4 overs, but Zaman Akhter (1/63 from 4) and Charlie Bennett (0/47 from 3) were taken apart.
Second Innings – Walter Blitz Nearly Pulls Off the Impossible
Paul Walter produced one of the innings of the Blast season – 78 off just 30 balls (12 fours, 4 sixes) at a staggering strike rate of 260. He raced Essex to 105/2 inside 8 overs, making the chase look entirely achievable. Michael Pepper fell early for 1 at 26/1, but Charlie Allison (21 off 14) provided useful support before falling at 103/2.
Walter’s dismissal at 105/3 (ball 8.1) triggered a middle-order wobble – Luc Benkenstein (12 off 8) fell at 117/4, Matthew Critchley for 3 at 121/5, and suddenly Essex were staring at collapse. Noah Thain (36 off 25, 2 fours, 2 sixes) and Simon Harmer (15 off 10) steadied things but the required rate spiralled. Shane Snater (33 not out off 14, 2 fours, 3 sixes) and Zaman Akhter (26 not out off 10, 2 fours, 2 sixes) launched a breathtaking late assault, adding 71 from the final 4.3 overs, but ran out of balls with the total on 233.
Reece Topley was the crucial difference for Surrey with 3/28 from 4 overs at economy 7.00 – the only bowler on either side to combine wickets with anything close to control. Tom Lawes took 3/48 from 4 and Lawrence added 2/24 from 3.

Turning Point
The match turned when Paul Walter was caught for 78 at 105/3 in ball 8.1. Walter had been dismantling Surrey’s attack at will, and with Essex motoring at over 13 an over, 240 looked gettable. His exit sparked three wickets for 16 runs as Essex slid from 105/3 to 121/5, and though Snater and Akhter launched a sensational late counter-attack, 7 runs proved too many.
