Surrey won by 7 runs in the 69th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at County Ground, Chelmsford. In a match that produced 473 runs across 40 overs, Surrey’s 240/4 looked imposing but Essex came within a whisker of hauling it in, falling at 233/8. Reece Topley‘s 3/28 proved the difference in a contest where both attacks took a hammering. Surrey stay 3rd (5W 3L, 20pts) while Essex slip to 9th (4W 4L, 16pts).
First Innings – Surrey Blast 240/4
Essex won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision they would have cause to question. Jason Roy (65 off 38, 6 fours, 3 sixes) and Laurie Evans (40 off 23, 6 fours, 1 six) got Surrey off to a blistering start, putting on 98 for the second wicket before Evans fell in the 9th over.
Josh Philippe (61 not out off 30, 5 fours, 4 sixes) maintained the tempo through the middle overs, while Ollie Pope (59 off 26, 10 fours, 1 six, SR 227) detonated in the death overs before being bowled at 221/3 in the 19th. He raced Essex to 105/2 inside 8 overs, making the chase look entirely achievable. Michael Pepper fell early for 1 at 26/1, but Charlie Allison (21 off 14) provided useful support before falling at 103/2.
Walter’s dismissal at 105/3 (ball 8.1) triggered a middle-order wobble – Luc Benkenstein (12 off 8) fell at 117/4, Matthew Critchley for 3 at 121/5, and suddenly Essex were staring at collapse.
