How Statz Rating works:
- Each player receives a contextual match impact score based on their all-round contribution — batting, bowling, and situational factors.
- Ratings are scaled against the season benchmark so they are directly comparable across fixtures and to the season leaderboard.
- A typical top performer scores around 100. Exceptional performances can exceed 100.
Essex vs Kent – T20 Blast 2026 Match Report | Statz
Essex Hold On by Three Runs as Kent’s Tail Nearly Pulls Off Stunning Heist
Essex won by 3 runs. Match 54 of 112 in the T20 Blast 2026, and it was an absolute belter at the County Ground, Chelmsford. Kent won the toss and chose to bowl, but it was Essex who had the last laugh – just about – after a nerve-shredding final over that had the home crowd on their feet.
First Innings – Essex Set 188 to Win
Essex lost Michael Pepper early for 6 off 8 balls, caught with the score on just 13 in the third over. Paul Walter punched a quick 17 off 13 with three fours before he too fell caught, leaving Essex 42/2 at the end of the powerplay.
Enter Charlie Allison. The young batter anchored the entire Essex innings with a superb 74 off 47 balls, lacing three fours and hammering six sixes. He and Jordan Cox rebuilt beautifully, Cox contributing a composed 40 off 31 with five fours and a six as the pair took the score from 42/2 to 100/3 before Cox was caught in the 14th over.
Luc Benkenstein came and went for 5, but the real fireworks came from Wiaan Mulder. The South African allrounder bludgeoned 29 off just 11 balls at a strike rate of 264, smashing three fours and two sixes in a devastating cameo that took Essex from 115/5 to 164/6. Allison kept ticking at the other end, and with Simon Harmer finishing unbeaten on 6 off 3, Essex posted 187/6.
For Kent, Matt Milnes was outstanding with the ball – 3/23 off his four overs at an economy of 5.75. Grant Stewart chipped in with 1/15 from two overs. On the other end of the spectrum, Keith Dudgeon went for 54 off his four and Frederick Klaassen conceded 48.
Second Innings – Kent’s Chase Falls Agonisingly Short
Kent’s chase started badly. Daniel Bell-Drummond managed just 2 off 6 before falling caught with the score on 6. Harry Finch hit one six on his way to 13 off 9, but when he was caught at 21/2, Kent were already behind the rate.
Zak Crawley struck three fours in a brisk 21 off 15, adding some impetus, but it was Sam Billings who gave Kent genuine belief. The wicketkeeper played a brilliant hand of 62 off 38 balls, cracking three fours and four sixes in an innings that dragged Kent right back into the contest.
But regular wickets kept the pressure cranked up. Joe Denly went cheaply for 1, Chris Benjamin made 16 off 13 before being caught, and when Billings finally fell at 119/4 in the 14th over, the momentum swung firmly back to Essex.
What followed was a dramatic collapse. Dudgeon blasted 15 off 8 before being run out, Stewart made 13 off 11 before falling caught, and Jake Lintott‘s 17 off 9 kept faint hopes alive. Kent went from 119/4 to 150/9 in the space of four overs. Then Klaassen walked in and went berserk – 18 not out off just 5 balls at a strike rate of 360, smashing a four and two sixes. But with Milnes falling for 1 at 150/9, the tail simply ran out of partners. Kent finished on 184/9, three runs short.
Zaman Akhter was the pick of the Essex bowlers with a superb 3/19 off four overs at an economy of just 4.75. Charlie Bennett grabbed 2/39, while Mulder added 1/41 to his batting heroics. Matthew Critchley also picked up a wicket, taking 1/18 from his two overs.
Statz MVP – Matt Milnes (Kent)
In a fascinating quirk, the Statz MVP comes from the losing side. Milnes posted an mi_rating of 117.56 thanks to his brilliant 3/23 at an economy of 5.75 – the most impactful bowling spell of the match. The Statz Match Impact rating calculates impact based on match context, and Milnes’ ability to restrict Essex in an innings where other Kent bowlers were being taken apart earned him top billing. Across 6 T20 Blast matches this season, Milnes has averaged an mi_rating of 49.54 with a cumulative total of 297.26. His bowling was world-class – Kent’s problem was everywhere else.

3/23 with the ball at 5.75 economy. Outstanding in defeat.
2. Zaman Akhter (Essex) – mi_rating 117.12
3/19 off four overs. The match-winning spell that kept Kent at bay.
3. Wiaan Mulder (Essex) – mi_rating 91.52
29 off 11 with the bat plus 1/41 with the ball. A genuine allround impact.
4. Frederick Klaassen (Kent) – mi_rating 78.99
1/48 bowling, but his unbeaten 18 off 5 at the death almost stole it.
5. Charlie Allison (Essex) – mi_rating 78.78
74 off 47 – the anchor innings that gave Essex a total to defend.
Turning Point – Billings Falls at 119/4
With Billings at the crease, Kent were in the hunt. He was striking at 163 and had the power to take the game deep. When he was caught in the 14th over with the score on 119, Kent still needed 69 off 39 balls – gettable with him in, but a tall order without. What followed proved the point: 119/4 became 150/9 in four overs as Essex’s bowlers, led by Akhter, ripped through the middle and lower order. Klaassen’s late fireworks proved it was not quite enough.
Match Context
This was a mid-table scrap between two sides locked on 12 points heading into the match. Essex sat 5th with a net run rate of +0.627, while Kent were 8th at +0.183. Both had won three and lost two from five matches. In a tight South Group, every win matters – and Essex’s ability to defend a par-ish total under pressure will be a huge confidence booster as the tournament hits its midway point, 54 matches deep into the 112-match competition.
