Kent vs Essex – T20 Blast 2026 Match Report | Statz
Essex won by 9 wickets (with 38 balls remaining) in match 24 of 112 in the T20 Blast 2026, dismantling Kent at the St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury. After bowling the hosts out for 129, Essex romped home in just 13.4 overs – a comprehensive nine-wicket victory that was never in doubt from the moment Kent’s top order crumbled.
Kent’s Top Order Collapses Under Essex Pressure
Kent won the toss but Essex elected to bowl – and made that decision look inspired inside four overs. Tawanda Muyeye fell for 1 off 2 balls with the score on 7, and Zak Crawley followed for 7 off 5 at 14/2. Sam Billings managed just 8 off 7 before departing at 27/3, and when Daniel Bell-Drummond was caught for 13 off 14, Kent were 30/4 after 5.4 overs. The damage was done.
Joe Denly scratched around for 14 off 19 balls before being bowled, and it was left to Dian Forrester to provide some resistance. Forrester top-scored with 34 off 34 balls, hitting three fours and a six, but a strike rate of 100 in a T20 tells its own story – he was fighting survival, not building momentum. Jake Lintott contributed 18 off 18 before Kent’s tail wagged briefly through Matt Milnes, whose unbeaten 15 off 7 balls (three fours, strike rate 214) at least pushed Kent to 129/9.
The Essex bowling unit shared the wickets superbly. Wiaan Mulder was the standout with 3/26 from his four overs at an economy of 6.5. Charlie Bennett matched him with 3/25 from three overs, while Shane Snater picked up 2/23 from four at a miserly 5.75. Simon Harmer was the most economical of the lot – 4-1-14-0, including a maiden, conceding just 3.5 runs per over without needing a wicket to justify his place.
Pepper and Walter Make Light Work of the Chase
Any hopes Kent had of defending 129 evaporated in the powerplay. Michael Pepper and Paul Walter put on 110 for the first wicket in just 11.1 overs, turning the chase into a procession.
Pepper was the aggressor, smashing 64 off 40 balls with eight fours and a six at a strike rate of 160. He found the boundary with ease, punishing anything short and driving through the covers with real authority. Walter played the perfect supporting role with an unbeaten 42 off 30 balls, clearing the rope once and finding the fence six times at a strike rate of 140.
When Pepper finally fell caught at 110/1, the result was long since settled. Charlie Allison came in and finished things off with a brisk 18 not out from 12 balls, Essex reaching 130/1 with 38 balls to spare. Kent’s bowlers had nowhere to hide – Matt Parkinson went for 12.5 an over, Milnes conceded 10, and Thomas Stewart Rogers picked up the only wicket but leaked 10.33 per over doing it.
Statz MVP – Michael Pepper
Michael Pepper takes the Statz MVP award with a match impact rating of 78.59. His 64 off 40 was the innings that turned a tricky chase into a formality. When the opposition posts 129 and your opener cracks 64 at a strike rate of 160, there is nothing left to do. Pepper set the tempo, dominated the powerplay, and ensured Essex were never under pressure at any stage of the run chase.

Turning Point
Kent 27/4 after 3.6 overs. Four top-order batters back in the pavilion inside four overs, including Crawley, Billings, and Bell-Drummond. On a ground where 160+ is par in T20 cricket, losing your top four for 27 is terminal. Essex’s new-ball bowling was clinical and Kent never recovered.
Match Context
This was Essex’s first win of the T20 Blast 2026, moving them to 1-2 after three matches. They sit 13th in the standings with 4 points but will take huge confidence from a performance this dominant. Kent drop to 2-1 and sit 9th with 8 points – a reminder that one bad powerplay can undo good early-season form.
