Surrey Set the Tone – 213/6
Lancashire won the toss and elected to bowl, but Jason Roy had other ideas. Roy smashed 45 off just 19 balls at a strike rate of 237, cracking five fours and three sixes before being caught with the score on 55 in the sixth over. That early assault set the tempo for everything that followed.
Adam Thomas (32 off 26) and Ollie Pope (31 off 20, SR 155) kept the scoreboard moving through the middle overs, building the innings from 55/1 to 110/3 before both fell in quick succession. Sam Curran chipped in with a useful 32 off 22, hitting two fours and two sixes before being run out at 182/6 in the 19th over.
Then came the Curran show. Tom Curran walked in and dismantled the Lancashire attack – 49 not out off 20 balls, five fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 245. He plundered runs at will in the final overs to lift Surrey from a competitive total to a daunting one. Jordan Clark finished unbeaten on 4 as Surrey closed on 213/6.
Lancashire’s bowling figures told a tough story. Paul Coughlin conceded 56 from his four overs at an economy of 14, while Chris Green went for 45 at 11.25. Only James Anderson emerged with credit – 1/23 from three overs at 7.67.
Lancashire Collapse in the Chase – 154 All Out
Chasing 214, Lancashire’s innings fell apart inside the powerplay. Keaton Jennings went for a duck, Matthew Hurst followed for nought, and when Ben McDermott was caught for 12 at 28/3 in the fourth over, the chase was already in serious trouble.
Joseph Moores briefly counter-attacked with 15 off 6 balls at a strike rate of 250, clubbing two sixes, but his dismissal at 45/4 left Lancashire reeling. Michael Jones (16 off 13) departed at 49/5 and the required rate was well beyond reach.
Paul Coughlin (37 off 24, three sixes) and Chris Green (35 off 25) added some respectability with a partnership that took the score from 49/5 to 136, but it was damage limitation rather than a genuine threat. Jack Blatherwick hit an unbeaten 19 off 11 with two sixes, but Lancashire were bowled out for 154 in the 17th over.
Tom Curran continued his outstanding match with the ball – 1/18 from three overs at an economy of 6. Reece Topley was superb with 2/28 from four overs (economy 7), while Yousef Majid claimed 3/42 and Jordan Clark took 2/23 from 2.1 overs.
