How to Bet on Golf: A Complete Beginner’s Guide
Golf betting is unlike any other sport. You’re not picking from two or three outcomes – you’re choosing from a field of 80, 120, sometimes 156 players. A 72-hole tournament runs across four days. There’s a cut after two rounds that eliminates the bottom half of the field. And the best player in the world still wins less than one in five tournaments they enter.
That sounds daunting. It also means the odds are genuinely generous, the each-way terms are among the best in betting, and a single well-researched pick at 40/1 can transform a weekend. Here’s everything you need to get started.
Golf Betting Is Different – Here’s Why
In football, you’re choosing between three possible outcomes. In horse racing, you’re typically picking from 8-20 runners. In golf, you’re choosing from a field that can exceed 150 players – which means even the biggest favourite rarely starts at odds shorter than 5/1, and most credible contenders are priced at 20/1 or more.
That pricing structure means each-way betting is the dominant strategy for most golf punters. Rather than needing your selection to win, each-way bets pay out if your player finishes in the top 5, top 8, or top 10 depending on the bookmaker’s terms. A 40/1 each-way selection that finishes 4th can still return a healthy profit.
The Main Golf Betting Markets
Outright Winner
Simple – your player wins the tournament. Full odds, high variance. Best suited to short-priced favourites (sub-8/1) if you want a genuine chance of outright success, or to each-way plays at bigger prices where a top-5 finish is a realistic outcome.
Each-Way
The most popular market in golf. Your bet is split – half on the player to win, half on them to finish inside the each-way places (typically top 5 for standard events, top 8 for Majors). Each-way place terms vary by bookmaker and tournament – always check before placing. Bet365 typically offer the most generous terms on Major championships.
Top 5 / Top 10 / Top 20 Finish
A simpler version of each-way – you’re just betting on whether the player finishes inside a specific bracket. Lower odds than outright, more likely to land. Useful for players you’re very confident will contend but aren’t sure will win.
Head-to-Head Matchups
Which of two named players finishes higher? Bookmakers offer these on dozens of player pairs per tournament. Useful for applying specific form or course history analysis to a direct comparison. Use the Statz Golf Compare tool to see a side-by-side SG breakdown of any two players before betting a matchup.
Make or Miss the Cut
Betting on whether a player survives into the weekend. Lower odds, more predictable for players with consistent records. A player who makes 18 of their last 20 cuts is a very different proposition to one who’s been volatile.
First Round Leader
Which player leads after round one? High variance, often generous prices on players with strong scoring ability in ideal early-draw conditions. Less relevant for most bettors but offers value in the right circumstances.
Key Stats to Use for Golf Betting
Traditional golf stats – fairways hit, greens in regulation – don’t predict future performance particularly well. The game-changing metric is Strokes Gained (SG).
SG measures how many strokes a player gains or loses against the tour average in each area of the game: Off the Tee (OTT), on Approach (APP), Around the Green (ARG), and Putting (PUTT). A player with +1.5 SG Total per round is gaining 1.5 strokes on the average tour player every round they play – which compounds significantly over 72 holes.
The most important things to check before placing any golf bet:
- Recent form (last 16 rounds): What are the player’s SG numbers over the last four tournaments? This is the most predictive window of current form.
- Course fit: Does the player’s SG profile match what the course demands? An elite putter heading to a putting-premium course is a very different bet to the same player at a ball-striking test.
- Course history: Has this player competed well at this venue before? Some players consistently thrive at courses that suit their eye and game.
