Bangladesh vs New Zealand – ODI Tri-Series 2026 Match Report | Statz
Bangladesh won by 55 runs at Chittagong in the 15th match of 29 in the tri-series ODI season, with Mustafizur Rahman‘s 5/43 dismantling New Zealand‘s reply to a competitive 265/8. It is Bangladesh‘s second consecutive win over the Kiwis in this series – they beat the same opposition by six wickets in Dhaka on April 20 – and leaves New Zealand needing to regroup heading into the business end of the tournament.

First Innings: Bangladesh 265/8 (50 overs)
New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl, but Bangladesh’s openers gave them little reward. Saif Hassan edged to slip for a duck in the first over (FOW 0/0.2), and Tanzid Hasan followed for just 1 at 9/2 inside two overs. Bangladesh were in early trouble at 9 for 2.
Soumya Sarkar steadied things alongside captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, but his dismissal for 18 at 32/3 in the 9th over threatened to undo the innings early. What followed was the backbone of the Bangladesh total – a fourth-wicket partnership between Shanto and Litton Das that rebuilt and accelerated through the middle overs.
Litton contributed 76 off 91 balls, holding one end together before falling bowled at 192/4 in the 38th over. Shanto pressed on to post his century – 105 off 119 (9 fours, 2 sixes) – before being caught at 221/5 in the 43rd over. Towhid Hridoy (33 not out off 29) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (22 off 18) provided the late impetus to push Bangladesh past 265.
For New Zealand, William O’Rourke was the pick of the bowlers with 3/32 off 7 overs (economy 4.57). Jayden Lennox took 2/50 off 10 and Benjamin Lister 2/62 off 10 (economy 6.20). Dean Foxcroft chipped in with 1/35 off 6.
Second Innings: New Zealand 210 all out (44.5 overs)
New Zealand’s reply started with early optimism. Henry Nicholls departed cheaply (4, 8/1, over 3.2) but Will Young (19) and Tom Latham (5) kept things ticking. The chase unravelled through the middle overs: Young went at 54/2 (13.3) and Latham at 61/3 (16.5), leaving New Zealand’s middle order exposed early.
Nick Kelly held firm with 59 off 80 (6 fours, 1 six), pushing New Zealand to 108/4 by the 25th over. But the required rate was climbing past nine an over, and Mustafizur Rahman was about to find his rhythm.
Mustafizur’s figures of 5/43 off 9 overs – with two maidens – told the story. Muhammad Arslan Abbas made 25 before going at 124/5. Josh Clarkson added 6 at 137/6. Nathan Smith 2 at 150/7. Jayden Lennox 2 at 154/8. William O’Rourke 1 at 160/9. The lower order crumbled.
Dean Foxcroft was magnificent in defeat – 75 off 72 with 7 sixes – but with no partner to sustain the chase, New Zealand folded for 210 in 44.5 overs. The other Bangladesh bowlers did their job: Nahid Rana 2/37 off 10 (economy 3.70), Mehidy Hasan Miraz 2/36 off 8.5 (economy 4.08), Shoriful Islam 1/19 off 7 (economy 2.71).
Statz MVP: Mustafizur Rahman
Statz rates Mustafizur Rahman as match MVP – and disagrees with the official Player of the Match award, which went to Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Mustafizur’s Statz rating calculates impact based on match context. His 5/43 in nine overs, two maidens included, broke open a chase that was still alive at the halfway point. Shanto’s century built the platform – but Mustafizur shut the door. That difference in match-defining contribution is why Statz diverges from the official decision.
Top 5 Statz Ratings
- Mustafizur Rahman (Bangladesh) – 182 Dream11 pts | Statz MVP – 5/43 off 9 overs, 2 maidens. The five-wicket haul that settled the match.
- Najmul Hossain Shanto (Bangladesh) – 173 Dream11 pts – 105 off 119 (9 fours, 2 sixes). Official MoM. The century that gave Bangladesh a target to defend.
- Dean Foxcroft (New Zealand) – 162 Dream11 pts – 75 off 72 with 7 sixes batting, 1/35 with the ball. Outstanding effort in a losing cause.
- William O’Rourke (New Zealand) – 118 Dream11 pts | Statz rating 100/100 – 3/32 off 7 (economy 4.57). New Zealand’s best with the ball in hand.
- Nick Kelly (New Zealand) – 109 Dream11 pts – 59 off 80 (6 fours, 1 six). Kept the chase alive through the middle overs.
Turning Point
Nick Kelly dismissed for 59, over 25.2, score 108/4.
New Zealand’s only meaningful partnership was broken. They still needed 158 from 25 overs at over six per over, with a depleted lower order and Mustafizur yet to complete his spell. The next six wickets fell for just 52 runs. From that dismissal, the match belonged to Bangladesh.
Match Context
This was the 15th match of 29 in the tri-series season, currently in the playoff phase. Bangladesh have won back-to-back games against New Zealand in this series (April 20 and April 23), building momentum on home soil at Chittagong. The head-to-head record historically has favoured New Zealand heavily (11-3 across 15 matches), but Bangladesh’s form in this series tells a different story.
For New Zealand, back-to-back ODI defeats to Bangladesh in sub-continental conditions will demand a response. For Bangladesh, it is a series that is shaping up nicely on familiar territory.
