Namibia beat South Africa by 18 runs – Tri-Nation Series Match Report
Namibia won by 18 runs in the 7th match of 20 in the Tri-Nation Series at Namibia Cricket Ground, Windhoek. A dominant all-round display from Ruben Trumpelmann – 3/24 with the ball and 12 off 6 with the bat – powered the hosts to a stunning upset victory over South Africa, extending Namibia’s perfect record to 4 wins from 4 matches in the tournament.
Namibia’s Batting Masterclass
South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl, but Namibia’s batting lineup made them pay immediately. Louren Steenkamp set the tone with a brisk 41 off 29 balls (3 fours, 2 sixes), falling clean bowled at 84/1 in the 9th over. The real fireworks came from Jan Frylinck, who delivered a match-defining 60 off 38 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes) at a strike rate of 158, building crucial partnerships through the middle overs.
Frylinck’s dismissal at 116/2 in the 12th over brought Gerhard Erasmus to the crease, who contributed 19 off 17 before falling caught at 133/3. The innings stuttered briefly as Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton (4 off 5) and Zane Green (5 off 4) fell in quick succession, but Alexander Busing-Volschenk steadied the ship with an unbeaten 13 off 15.
The late-order fireworks came from Trumpelmann, who smashed 12 off just 6 balls (1 six) at a strike rate of 200 in the 18th over, pushing Namibia to 163 all out. South Africa’s bowling was expensive throughout – Prenelan Subrayen took 3/32 from 4 overs, while Duan Jansen and Bjorn Fortuin each claimed 2 wickets. Dewald Brevis took 1/22 from 2 overs.
South Africa’s Chase Falls Short
South Africa’s chase began poorly. Lhuan-dre Pretorius fell for 9 at 19/1 in the 3rd over, and Jordan Hermann departed for 7 at 15/2 in the 2nd over – a disastrous start that put immediate pressure on the middle order.
Brevis, South Africa’s standout performer, fought back with a brilliant 75 off 50 balls (4 fours, 5 sixes) at a strike rate of 150, keeping the chase alive almost single-handedly. He built a crucial 118-run partnership with the early batsmen before falling caught at 133/3 in the 17th over. Tony de Zorzi managed 9 off 13, and Rubin Hermann contributed 12 off 9, but the required rate climbed steadily.
Connor Esterhuizen (7 off 8) and Jansen (25 not out off 17, 1 four, 1 six) fought valiantly in the lower order, but Namibia’s bowling attack proved too disciplined. Trumpelmann’s 3/24 from 4 overs was the standout display, supported by JJ Smit‘s 3/31 from 4 overs and Jack Brassell‘s 1/29 from 4. Gerhard Erasmus took 1/7 from 2 overs with miserly economy. South Africa finished on 148/9 in 20.1 overs – 15 runs short of the target.
