Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad – IPL 2026 Match Report | Statz
Sunrisers Hyderabad won by 5 wickets (with 6 balls remaining) to move firmly into the top three of the IPL 2026 standings. This was the 63rd match of 74 in the Regular Season, and it came at a critical juncture – Chennai Super Kings slipped to 6th on 12 points, their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, while SRH climbed to 3rd on 14 points and tightened their grip on a top-four finish. A classic Chepauk showdown, won by the visitors.
First Innings: Chennai Super Kings 180/7 (20 overs)
CSK won the toss and elected to bat at MA Chidambaram Stadium – and they made a fast start. Sanju Samson (27 off 13, SR 208, 5 fours, 1 six) came out swinging at the top of the order, but fell caught at 31/1 in the 2.3rd over. Urvil Patel arrived and kept the foot on the gas with 13 off 8 (2 sixes), before being clean bowled at 48/2 off 4.3 overs.
Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled to get going with just 15 off 21 balls (SR 71), finally departing caught at 100/3 in the 11.3rd over – the innings hitting a brief wall in the middle overs. Kartik Sharma cracked 32 off 19 (SR 168, 3 fours, 2 sixes) before being dismissed caught at 90/4 off 9.4 overs – his dismissal slightly earlier in over sequence, but a combative cameo that helped CSK stay on track through the power surge.
The innings centrepiece was Dewald Brevis, who cracked 44 off 27 (SR 163, 2 fours, 4 sixes) and looked set to take CSK beyond 190. He fell clean bowled at 159/6 off 17.5 overs – the key moment that cost CSK that extra gear in the final phase. Shivam Dube contributed 26 off 23 before being clean bowled at 164/7 off 18.3 overs, and Prashant Veer chipped in with 11 off 9 at the death. CSK finished 180/7 – a competitive total but ultimately not quite enough.
For SRH with the ball: Pat Cummins was the standout with 3/28 off 4 overs (economy 7.00). Sakib Hussain took 2/34 off 4 (economy 8.50). Eshan Malinga picked up 1/26 off 4 (economy 6.50). Praful Hinge took 1/37 off 3 (economy 12.33). Nitish Kumar Reddy went for 35 off 2 (economy 17.50) but stayed wicketless.
Second Innings: Sunrisers Hyderabad 181/5 (19 overs)
SRH needed 181 to win and made controlled progress. Travis Head fell early for 6 off 6 at 18/1 in the 2.3rd over, caught – not his night. Abhishek Sharma (26 off 21, SR 124, 3 fours, 1 six) kept the tempo going before departing caught at 56/2 off 7.4 overs.
From there, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen combined to put the chase to bed. Kishan was anchor and aggressor in one – 70 off 47 (SR 149, 7 fours, 3 sixes) – and Klaasen the finisher with 47 off 26 (SR 181, 6 fours, 2 sixes). Their partnership powered SRH from 56/2 to 131/3, at which point Klaasen was stumped at 131/4 off 14.3 overs. Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with 11 off 7 before Kishan fell caught at 175/5 off 18.3 overs.
By then the equation was trivial. Salil Arora (10* off 5) and Ravichandran Smaran (5* off 2) completed the formality, SRH crossing the line at 181/5 in 19 overs with 6 balls to spare.
CSK bowling: Mukesh Choudhary was the pick with 2/36 off 4 (economy 9.00). Akeal Hosein took 1/21 off 3 (economy 7.00). Noor Ahmad took 1/40 off 4 (economy 10.00). Anshul Kamboj returned 1/46 off 4 (economy 11.50). Spencer Johnson went for 0/26 off 3.
Statz MVP: Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins earns the Statz MVP with a rating of 98.74. His 3/28 off 4 overs was the decisive bowling performance – breaking the back of the CSK innings at MA Chidambaram, a ground that rewards batters. Statz calculates impact based on match context, and Cummins took his wickets at precisely the moments that kept CSK short of a match-winning total.
The official Man of the Match went to Ishan Kishan for his 70 off 47. Statz disagrees – Cummins set up the win before a ball was bowled in the chase. The 70 was important, but without Cummins restricting CSK, the target would have been out of reach before Kishan had his chance.

Turning Point
The pivotal moment came in the 17.5th over when Dewald Brevis was clean bowled by Pat Cummins with CSK at 159/6. Brevis had been the one CSK batter capable of taking the innings beyond 190. His dismissal at that score, with barely two overs remaining, ended any hope of a commanding total – CSK managed just 21 runs from there to the close. Cummins was at the heart of it: the wicket and the death-over pressure that followed.
Match Context
This was the 63rd match of 74 in the IPL 2026 Regular Season, played at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
Sunrisers Hyderabad sit 3rd in the table with 14 points from 12 games (W7 L5, NRR +0.331). A win here keeps them firmly in the top-four conversation – two more wins from their remaining games should be enough to seal a playoff berth.
Chennai Super Kings drop to 6th on 12 points from 12 games (W6 L6, NRR +0.027). Still in the hunt – level on points with Rajasthan Royals in 5th and Delhi Capitals in 7th – but the margin for error is gone. A home defeat against a direct rival makes their top-four path significantly harder with the league phase tightening.
The IPL 2026 table is knotted from 4th to 7th: four teams separated by a single point before this round. Every game counts from here.
