SFU vs Washington Freedom – MLC 2026 Match Report | Statz
San Francisco Unicorns won by 8 wickets (with 29 balls remaining) in match 15 of 34 in Major League Cricket 2026, chasing down 191 in just 15.1 overs at Oakland Coliseum. Lhuan-dre Pretorius smashed 66 off 26 balls, Finn Allen blasted 45 off 18, and the pair put on 102 inside 6 overs to make Washington Freedom’s 190/4 look pedestrian.
First Innings – Washington Freedom 190/4 (20 overs)
Washington Freedom won the toss and elected to bat, and Mitchell Owen set the tone immediately. The opener crunched 39 off 20 balls (3 fours, 3 sixes) at a strike rate of 195 before falling at 55/2 in the powerplay. Steven Smith was bowled cheaply for 3 off 8 balls at 26/1, struggling to time the ball on a pitch that favoured aggression.
Andries Gous was the star of the innings. The South African-born keeper-batter played a magnificent knock of 83 not out off 50 balls, hitting 4 fours and 7 sixes at a strike rate of 166. He anchored the middle overs brilliantly after Mark Chapman (17 off 13) fell at 85/3 (10.2 overs), and then accelerated through the death.
Nikhil Chaudhary provided the perfect foil with a quickfire 32 off 19 balls (2 fours, 2 sixes) in a partnership that took the score from 85/3 to 144/4. Obus Pienaar chipped in with 10 not out off 10 as Freedom finished on 190/4 – a total that should have been more than competitive.
For the Unicorns, the bowling was expensive across the board. Xavier Bartlett went for 0/50 from 4 overs, while Haris Rauf returned 1/42. Ghulam Mudassar was the pick with 1/29 from 4, and Matthew Short contributed a handy 1/12 from 2 overs of spin.
Second Innings – San Francisco Unicorns 193/2 (15.1 overs)
What followed was one of the most devastating displays of power hitting in MLC 2026 so far. Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Finn Allen came out swinging and never stopped.
The opening partnership produced 102 runs in just 5.4 overs. Allen smashed 45 off 18 balls with 4 fours and 4 sixes before holing out at 102/1. Pretorius was even more destructive, belting 66 off 26 balls (3 fours, 7 sixes) at a staggering strike rate of 254. He fell at 125/2 in the 9th over, by which point the game was long gone.
Matthew Short (34* off 26, 2 fours, 2 sixes) and Aaron Hardie (42* off 22, 6 fours, 1 six) finished the job with an unbroken 68-run partnership at nearly 10 an over. The Unicorns reached 193/2 with 29 balls to spare – a comprehensive demolition job.
Freedom’s bowlers were taken apart. Lockie Ferguson conceded 45 from 3 overs, Amila Aponso went for 44 from 3, and Marco Jansen leaked 40 from 3 despite picking up the only wicket (1/40). Only Nikhil Chaudhary emerged with any credit – his 4 overs of spin going for 29 with 1 wicket, an economy of 7.25 that looked miserly by comparison.
Statz MVP – Nikhil Chaudhary (100)
Nikhil Chaudhary is the Statz MVP of the match with a perfect rating of 100 out of 100. The Statz Match Impact rating calculates impact based on match context, and Chaudhary’s all-round contribution was rated the highest in the match. He scored 32 off 19 balls (SR 168) to boost Freedom’s total past 190, then returned the most economical figures of the second innings with 1/29 from 4 overs. In a game where every other bowler was smashed to all corners, Chaudhary’s control stood out.
The official Man of the Match went to Lhuan-dre Pretorius for his scintillating 66 off 26. Statz disagrees – Chaudhary’s combined batting and bowling impact across both innings edges it on the numbers. Pretorius was extraordinary with the bat (mi_rating 98.19), but Chaudhary’s dual contribution in a losing cause gets the nod from the algorithm.
Top 5 Statz Ratings

Turning Point
The opening powerplay of the chase decided this match. Pretorius and Allen put on 102 runs in 5.4 overs – an opening stand that made 191 look trivial. By the time Allen fell at 102/1, the Unicorns needed just 89 from 86 balls with 9 wickets in hand. Despite posting 190/4, Washington Freedom were blown away by the sheer power and intent of the Unicorns’ top order.
Match Context
This dominant win takes the San Francisco Unicorns to the top of the MLC 2026 standings with 6 points from 5 games (W3 L2, NRR +0.489).
