For MI, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the attack with 4-0-35-0 – tidy figures given the conditions. Trent Boult, Hardik Pandya and Mitchell Santner each picked up a wicket but leaked runs freely, while Mayank Markande’s two overs cost 40 runs at an economy of 20.

MI’s reply started with immediate drama. Rohit Sharma retired hurt after 19 off 13 balls – an early blow MI could ill afford. Ryan Rickelton kept things moving with 37 off 22 balls before being caught off Suyash Sharma, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

Suryakumar Yadav made 33 off 22 before being caught off Krunal Pandya at 121/4 in the 12th over, and Hardik Pandya followed for 40 off 22 balls. At 154/6 in the 16th over, the chase looked dead.

But Sherfane Rutherford had other ideas. The West Indian smashed an unbeaten 71 off 31 balls – one four, nine sixes, strike rate 229.03 – and gave MI a genuine chance in the final few overs. Mitchell Santner contributed 8 not out from the other end. Ultimately Rutherford’s late fireworks weren’t enough and MI fell 18 runs short, finishing 222/5.

Suyash Sharma was RCB’s most effective bowler with 2/47 off 4 overs, while Krunal Pandya’s 4-0-26-1 was the best economy of the RCB attack. Jacob Duffy’s four overs cost 58 and could have been more painful had MI not lost wickets.
