Essex won by 8 wickets (with 19 balls remaining) in the 107th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at Kennington Oval, London. Matthew Critchley delivered a match-defining performance – 3/16 from 4 overs with the ball – to dismantle Surrey’s batting and set up a comfortable chase that Essex completed with 19 balls to spare. Surrey’s Collapse – 123 All Out
Essex won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that paid immediate dividends. Surrey’s top order crumbled under pressure, with Jason Roy caught for 13 at 42/1 in the 5th over and Laurie Evans run out for 4 at 6/2 in the opening over. Josh Philippe offered some resistance with 33 off 25 balls (3 fours, 1 six) before being clean bowled at 58/3 in the 8th over, while Ollie Pope managed 22 off 23 at 82/4 in the 13th over.
Chris Jordan provided late-order fireworks with 25 off 16 balls (1 four, 2 sixes) at a strike rate of 156, but it proved too little too late. Surrey’s innings unravelled completely, losing their last six wickets for just 41 runs. Matthew Critchley was the architect of Surrey’s downfall, claiming 3/16 from 4 overs at an economy of 4. Shane Snater took 2/36 from 4 overs, while Charlie Bennett and Samuel Cook each claimed 2 wickets to complete Essex’s bowling dominance.
Essex’s Cruise to Victory
Michael Pepper took centre stage in Essex’s chase, striking 71 off 56 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes) at a strike rate of 127 to guide his side home with contemptuous ease. Paul Walter started brightly with 21 off 17 (4 fours) before being clean bowled at 49/1 in the 5th over, but Pepper’s dominance made the target a formality.
Jordan Cox contributed 16 off 15 (1 six) at 93/2 in the 12th over, and Charlie Allison finished unbeaten on 13 off 13 as Essex sealed victory with 19 balls remaining. Surrey’s bowlers had no answer to Pepper’s aggressive intent – Chris Jordan conceded 26 from 3 overs, while Sean Abbott went for 19 from 2 overs. Only Daniel Lawrence offered any economy, returning 4 from 2 overs.

Match Context
