Gloucestershire beat Surrey by 57 runs – T20 Blast Match Report
Gloucestershire won by 57 runs in the 77th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at County Ground, Bristol. D’Arcy Short produced a devastating batting display – 92 off just 56 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 164 – to propel Gloucestershire to 191/5 and secure a commanding victory that lifts them to 2nd place (6W 3L, 24pts). Surrey, electing to bowl after winning the toss, were left chasing 192 but collapsed to 134 all out in 19.4 overs, slipping to 7th (5W 4L, 20pts).
Gloucestershire’s Batting Masterclass
D’Arcy Short took centre stage from the opening ball, striking at a rate that kept Surrey’s bowlers under constant pressure. Dawid Malan provided early support with 28 off 19 (5 fours) before falling caught at 46/1 in the 4th over. Miles Hammond departed for just 4 at 68/2, but Jack Taylor steadied the ship with 40 off 26 (3 fours, 1 six), building crucial momentum in the middle overs.
Short’s assault never relented. He reached 92 not out – the standout individual performance of the evening – striking boundaries at will and keeping the scoreboard ticking over at better than a run a ball throughout his 56-ball stay. Liam Scott (9 off 11) and Kamran Dhariwal (6 off 4) chipped in lower down, but Short’s dominance meant Gloucestershire never lost momentum. Surrey’s attack was blunted – Reece Topley conceded 39 from 4 overs, Chris Jordan went for 44 from 4, and Sean Abbott leaked 36 from 4. Tom Curran and Daniel Lawrence took a wicket each but could not stem the flow.
Surrey’s Chase Crumbles
Chasing 192, Surrey’s top order never settled. Jason Roy struck 11 off 8 (1 four, 1 six) before falling caught at 14/1 in the 2nd over. Laurie Evans was dismissed for just 3 at 8/2, leaving Surrey in early trouble. Josh Philippe (15 off 11, 3 fours) and Ollie Pope (20 off 15, 2 fours, 1 six) tried to rebuild, but the asking rate climbed relentlessly.
Daniel Lawrence showed fight with 38 off 31 (2 fours, 1 six), but he was the only Surrey batter to reach 30. Chris Jordan struck 27 off 22 (2 sixes) in a late cameo, but by then the match was beyond reach. Gloucestershire’s bowling was clinical – James Hayes took 3/23 from 3.4 overs, Matthew Taylor claimed 2/33 from 4, and Liam Scott picked up 2/22 from 4. Surrey were bundled out for 134, a 57-run defeat that leaves their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Turning Point
The match was decided in Gloucestershire’s first innings. D’Arcy Short‘s relentless assault – particularly his acceleration from the 10th over onwards – meant Surrey were always chasing a total that required near-perfect execution. Once Roy fell early in the chase at 14/1, and Evans departed cheaply at 8/2, Surrey’s batting lineup lacked the depth and momentum to recover. The gap between 191 and 134 tells the story – Short’s individual brilliance had set a target Surrey simply could not match.
