First Innings – Derbyshire: 173/10 (20 overs)
Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat, but early wickets left them scrambling. Aneurin Donald (20 off 12, 3×4 1×6, SR 167) got Derbyshire off to a brisk start before falling caught at 28/2 in the third over. Martin Andersson (12 off 6, SR 200) struck a quick-fire cameo but was bowled at 38/3, and when Wayne Madsen (7 off 5) was bowled at 55/4, Derbyshire were in trouble at the end of the powerplay.
Caleb Jewell (14 off 14, 3×4) anchored briefly before falling caught at 51/3 in the sixth over. Ross Whiteley (12 off 8, 1×6) was stumped at 75/6, and Amrit Basra (7 off 14, SR 50) struggled to rotate the strike, eventually caught at 116/7.
The innings was rescued by a superb partnership between Matthew Montgomery and Nick Potts. Montgomery smashed 50 off 30 balls (6×4, 1×6, SR 167), the top score of the innings, before falling caught at 143/8 in the 17th over. Ben Aitchison (8 off 7, 1×6) was bowled at 173/10, and Jack Morley was run out off the final ball as Derbyshire posted 173.

Second Innings – Essex: 179/5 (19.4 overs)

Paul Walter then took control with a blistering 41 off 24 (9×4, SR 171), putting Derbyshire’s attack under immediate pressure. Walter fell caught at 90/2, but his knock had set the platform.
Luc Benkenstein (1 off 2) was run out almost immediately at 93/3, and when Wiaan Mulder (12 off 13, 1×6, SR 92) was caught at 109/4, Essex still needed 65 from 45 balls.
Charlie Allison and Matthew Critchley (37 off 21, 3×4 1×6, SR 176) put together the match-winning partnership. Critchley was the aggressor, smashing boundaries at will before falling caught at 167/5 in the 19th over. Allison kept his nerve throughout, finishing unbeaten on 67 off 49 balls (6×4, 3×6, SR 137) to steer Essex home with two balls to spare. Simon Harmer (4* off 1, 1×4) was alongside him at the end.
For Derbyshire, Nick Potts was the pick of the bowlers with 1/23 from 3.4 overs (Econ 6.27), while Akif Javed went for just 28 from his four overs without taking a wicket. Martin Andersson was expensive, conceding 45 from four overs.

Turning Point
The dismissal of Matthew Montgomery at 143/8 in the 17th over was the key moment. Montgomery had dragged Derbyshire from 75/6 to a competitive total with his counterattacking 50. Had he survived another two or three overs, Derbyshire could easily have pushed past 190. Instead, the last three wickets fell for just 30 runs, leaving them roughly 15-20 runs short of a truly defendable score.
Match Context
Essex climb to 13th in the T20 Blast 2026 standings with 4 points from 3 matches (W1 L2, NRR -0.155). Their first win of the campaign, but plenty of ground to make up. Derbyshire sit 5th with 8 points from 4 matches (W2 L2, NRR +1.183) – still well placed, but consecutive losses would start to hurt.
