Pepper was the aggressor, smashing 64 off 40 balls with eight fours and a six at a strike rate of 160. He found the boundary with ease, punishing anything short and driving through the covers with real authority. Walter played the perfect supporting role with an unbeaten 42 off 30 balls, clearing the rope once and finding the fence six times at a strike rate of 140.

When Pepper finally fell caught at 110/1, the result was long since settled. Charlie Allison came in and finished things off with a brisk 18 not out from 12 balls, Essex reaching 130/1 with 38 balls to spare. Kent’s bowlers had nowhere to hide – Matt Parkinson went for 12.5 an over, Milnes conceded 10, and Thomas Stewart Rogers picked up the only wicket but leaked 10.33 per over doing it.
