Hampshire vs Essex – T20 Blast 2026 Match Report | Statz
Hampshire won by 30 runs in the 18th match of 112 in the T20 Blast 2026. Batting first at the County Ground in Southampton, Hampshire posted 200/4 before Scott Currie‘s devastating 4/18 restricted Essex to 170/7 in a match that never truly got away from the hosts after their explosive middle-overs batting.
Essex won the toss and elected to bowl, but Hampshire’s batters made them pay. This result gives Hampshire their first win of the T20 Blast campaign after losing to Somerset in their opener, while Essex have now lost both of their fixtures.
Hampshire Innings – 200/4 (20 overs)
Hampshire lost James Vince early – caught for 8 off just 3 balls with the score on 17 in the second over. Toby Albert followed for 13 at 26/2 in the fourth over, and when Tom Prest departed for 11 at 52/3 in the seventh over, Essex had the upper hand.
Joe Weatherley steadied things with a composed 47 off 34 balls (4 fours, 2 sixes, SR 138) before falling at 116/4 in the 14th over. That brought Hilton Cartwright to the crease alongside Tristan Stubbs, and the pair took the game away from Essex with an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 84 off just 38 balls.
Stubbs top-scored with an unbeaten 69 off 42 (3 fours, 5 sixes, SR 164), while Cartwright was equally destructive with 46 not out off 21 (5 fours, 2 sixes, SR 219). The carnage in the death overs pushed Hampshire past 200.
Essex’s bowling was expensive across the board. Charlie Bennett picked up 2/44 from his four overs, while Wiaan Mulder went for 33 off just two overs at an economy of 16.50. Simon Harmer (1/23, Econ 7.67) and Matthew Critchley (1/23, Econ 7.67) kept things relatively tight, but it was not enough to contain the Hampshire middle order.
Essex Innings – 170/7 (20 overs)
Essex needed a flying start chasing 201 but lost Paul Walter for 9 at 17/1 in the third over. Matthew Critchley was bowled for just 2 at 35/2, and when Michael Pepper fell for 25 (17 balls, 1 four, 2 sixes, SR 147) at 41/3, Essex were in deep trouble at the end of the powerplay.
Luc Benkenstein and Wiaan Mulder rebuilt with a 39-run stand, but Mulder’s dismissal at 80/4 in the 11th over kept the required rate climbing. Benkenstein found a willing partner in Noah Thain (18 off 11, 3 fours, SR 164), and the pair added 35 before Thain fell at 115/5 in the 14th over.
Benkenstein battled on to 48 off 31 (2 fours, 3 sixes, SR 155) but was caught at 120/6 in the 16th over, and with him went Essex’s last realistic chance. Simon Harmer blazed an unbeaten 36 off 18 (1 four, 3 sixes, SR 200) at the death but could not bridge the gap, with Simon Fernandes bowled for 6 at 130/7.
Scott Currie was the star with the ball, returning outstanding figures of 4/18 from his four overs at an economy of 4.50 – the only Hampshire bowler to concede less than eight an over. Chris Wood chipped in with 2/33, while Andrew Neal took 1/36. James Fuller had a night to forget, going wicketless for 49 off four overs.
Statz MVP – Scott Currie (169.7)
Scott Currie‘s match impact rating of 169.7 – calculated based on match context – was comfortably the highest in the game. His 4/18 at an economy of 4.50 was the decisive bowling performance in a match where runs flowed at the other end. No official Man of the Match was awarded for this fixture.
Top 5 Statz Ratings
- Scott Currie (HAM) – 169.7 – Four wickets for 18 runs; the match-defining spell that Essex never recovered from.
- Simon Harmer (ESS) – 109.17 – Dual contribution: 1/23 with the ball and a fighting 36 off 18 (SR 200) batting at number seven in a losing cause.
- Hilton Cartwright (HAM) – 82.93 – Explosive unbeaten 46 off 21 (SR 219) in the death overs to push Hampshire past 200.
- Tristan Stubbs (HAM) – 77.76 – Top scorer with 69 not out off 42, anchored the innings through the middle and death overs.
- Luc Benkenstein (ESS) – 72.35 – Top-scored for Essex with 48 off 31, kept the chase alive until the 16th over.
Turning Point
The dismissal of Luc Benkenstein at 120/6 in the 16th over was the moment the match was decided. Benkenstein had held the Essex chase together with 48 off 31, but his departure left Essex needing 81 from 29 balls with only the tail for company. While Simon Harmer swung hard at the end, the required rate had climbed beyond reach.
Match Context
This was the 18th match of 112 in the T20 Blast 2026 group stage. Hampshire bounce back from their opening defeat to Somerset with a convincing 30-run win at home. Essex, who also lost their opener against Sussex, are now winless from two matches and sit bottom of the early standings.
The T20 Blast is still in its infancy with plenty of cricket ahead, but Hampshire will take confidence from a 200-run total and a match-winning bowling display from Currie. Essex need to find a way to contain death-overs batting and rediscover their top-order form if they are to climb the table.
