Portland Trail Blazers vs San Antonio Spurs: NBA Playoffs Preview and Prediction
The headliner is missing. Victor Wembanyama is out with a rib injury, and without him the San Antonio Spurs are a very different team. They still open as 1.20 (-560) favorites at home against the Portland Trail Blazers, who arrive with their own injury issues – Anfernee Simons (wrist – out) and Josh Giddey (hamstring – out) both miss Game 1. But Portland has Deni Avdija, and right now Avdija is playing at an elite level. Dylan Harper is also out for San Antonio (thumb).
Team Form and Stats
San Antonio’s regular season stats: 80% (W8-L2), 124.2 PPG – the highest scoring average of any team in this round – with a blazing pace of 111.5. The Spurs shoot 46.6% from the field and 36.6% from three, while allowing 110.6 PPG. Last five for SAS: L-W-W-W-L. A bit erratic at the end of the year, but the offense has been elite all season.
Portland is 70% (W7-L3) with 116.3 PPG and an 84.3% free throw rate – the best in this series. The Blazers allow 106.3 PPG on defense and play at a solid fast pace (105.7). Last five for POR: W-W-W-L-L. They faded late, too. The H2H this season is 2-1 in San Antonio’s favor with an average margin of +6.3. De’Aaron Fox dropped 37 in a Spurs win.
Key Players and Matchups
De’Aaron Fox projects for 14.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists as San Antonio’s primary ball-handler without Harper in the rotation. Keldon Johnson is the secondary scorer at 14.8 points and 4.9 rebounds – he has been remarkably consistent all season.
Deni Avdija is the player of the moment. He projects for 26.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 7.3 assists – an all-around line that makes him Portland’s clear first option and one of the more complete performers in the league right now. Jrue Holiday adds 18.9 points and 5.1 assists, and Toumani Camara contributes 15.7 points off the wing. See the full projections for updated lines.
Prop and Betting Angles
Avdija’s prop streaks are the most compelling in the entire first round:
- Keldon Johnson – Over 10+ Points: 12-game milestone streak, last five: [18, 17, 20, 13, 10]. Available at 1.60 odds. He has not dropped below double digits in over three weeks.
- Deni Avdija – Over 20+ Points: 9-game milestone streak, last five: [41, 25, 35, 29, 26]. Available at 1.40 odds. The floor is elite right now.
- Deni Avdija – Over 25+ Points: 7-game streak, last five: [41, 25, 35, 29, 26]. Available at 2.00 odds. All five of his last performances cleared this number. That is extraordinary consistency.
- Deni Avdija – Over 30.5 Points+Assists: 7-game streak, last five: [53, 35, 40, 35, 33]. The combined scoring and playmaking numbers are at a different level entirely. Build a parlay around Avdija at the Statz bet builder.
The total at 221.5 is the highest of the seven first-round games. Both teams play fast, both score over 116 PPG – and without Wemby’s defensive impact, Portland should find easier shots than expected. The over is the market consensus and the data backs it up.

Prediction
Without Wembanyama, San Antonio’s defensive ceiling drops dramatically. Fox and Johnson will produce – but Deni Avdija at full power is a problem that the Spurs cannot handle without their best player. Portland covers and possibly steals Game 1 in San Antonio. The Blazers have the star power on the floor tonight – it just is not wearing a Spurs jersey.
Pick: Portland Trail Blazers +10.5 | Over 221.5
