Somerset beat Yorkshire by 2 wickets (with 1 ball remaining) – T20 Blast Match Report
Somerset won by 2 wickets (with 1 ball remaining) in the 110th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at Headingley, Leeds. Craig Overton delivered a match-winning all-round masterclass – 82 off just 30 balls with the bat and 2/36 with the ball – to guide Somerset home in a pulsating finish. The win lifts Somerset to 5th (7W 5L, 28pts) while Yorkshire remain 4th (7W 4L 1T, 30pts) but see their playoff hopes complicated.
Yorkshire Bat First – Lyth Leads 161 Total
Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bat, but struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Somerset attack. Adam Lyth was the standout performer with 64 off 40 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes) at a strike rate of 160, anchoring the innings through the middle overs. His dismissal caught at 103/1 in the 13th over (ball 13.3) proved costly as wickets tumbled around him.
Moeen Ali fell for a duck at 9/2 in the opening over, while Jonny Bairstow was clean bowled for just 1 at 41/4. George Hill contributed 19 off 20 before being caught at 99/5, and William Luxton made 17 off 13 (4 fours) at 38/3. Lower-order cameos from Logan van Beek (12 off 9, 2 fours) and Andrew Tye (16 off 8, 2 sixes) pushed Yorkshire to 161 for 9.
Jake Ball was Somerset’s standout bowler with 3/30 from 4 overs, while Riley Meredith and Daniel Sams each took 2 wickets. Craig Overton opened the bowling with 2/36 from 4 overs, setting the tone for Somerset’s chase.
Somerset’s Dramatic Chase – Overton Seals Victory
Somerset’s chase began poorly. Will Smeed made 22 off 17 (2 fours, 1 six) before being caught at 28/1 in the 5th over, and the next four batsmen fell in quick succession – Thomas Rew for 1 at 8/2, Tom Banton for 1 at 18/3, James Rew for 1 at 26/4, and Tom Kohler-Cadmore clean bowled for 2 at 38/5. Somerset were in deep trouble at 38/5 in the 8th over, needing 124 off 73 balls.
Lewis Goldsworthy (19 off 18, 1 four, 1 six) and Lewis Gregory (22 off 21, 3 fours) steadied the ship with a 20-run partnership, but the real turning point came when Craig Overton strode to the crease at 82/7 in the 14th over. What followed was explosive – Overton smashed 82 off just 30 balls (9 fours, 5 sixes) at a strike rate of 273, taking Somerset from 82/7 to the brink of victory. His unbeaten innings included a devastating assault on Yorkshire’s death bowling, with Andrew Tye (1/34 from 4 overs) and Matthew Revis (1/48 from 3.5 overs) unable to contain the onslaught.
Somerset reached 165 for 8 off 19.5 overs, winning with just 1 ball remaining. Hasan Ali took 2/30 from 4 overs for Yorkshire, while George Hill claimed 2/13 from 4 overs – a miserly spell that went unrewarded.
