Northamptonshire Post 143
Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl, but Northamptonshire made early inroads through aggressive batting. Ricardo Vasconcelos struck 15 off 10 balls (3 fours) before falling LBW at 15/1 in the 1.4 over. Chris Lynn then took centre stage with a blistering 39 off 26 (3 fours, 3 sixes) at a strike rate of 150, building momentum until he was clean bowled at 91/2 in the 11.2 over.
Nathan McSweeney fell cheaply for 1 at 18/3, and David Willey managed just 6 at 26/4 as Northamptonshire’s innings stuttered. Saif Zaib steadied the ship with 26 off 28 (1 four, 1 six), while Lewis McManus contributed a brisk 21 off 16 (1 four) to push the total to 143 all out in 19.2 overs.
Jake Ball was the standout bowler for Somerset, taking 4/17 from 4 overs at an economy of 4.25 – a miserly display that nearly won the match for the visitors. Riley Meredith took 3/21 from 4 overs, while Craig Overton claimed 2/33 from 4.
Somerset Fall Short in Chase
Tom Banton was dismissed for a duck at 0/1 in the opening over, setting a difficult tone for Somerset’s chase. Will Smeed then took the attack to Northamptonshire’s bowlers with 49 off 35 (5 fours, 2 sixes) at a strike rate of 140, keeping Somerset in the hunt through the middle overs before falling at 74/2 in the 11.2 over.
Thomas Rew managed just 4 at 6/3, and James Rew was clean bowled for 3 at 12/4. Tom Kohler-Cadmore fought back with 29 off 37 (1 four, 1 six), building a crucial 92-run stand with Lewis Gregory (13 off 15, 1 four) to keep Somerset within striking distance at 104/5 in the 16.4 over.
But Willey’s bowling prowess proved decisive. His 3/17 from 4 overs at an economy of 4.25 strangled Somerset’s chase, while Ben Sanderson took 3/28 from 4 overs and James Sales claimed 1/16 from 4. Somerset finished on 126/9, falling 17 runs short of their target.
