Hampshire beat Essex by 75 runs – T20 Blast Match Report
Hampshire won by 75 runs in the 109th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at The Rose Bowl, Southampton. James Vince delivered a masterclass with 125 off 61 balls – striking at 205 with 14 fours and 7 sixes – as Hampshire posted 211 for 3, then Sonny Baker dismantled Essex with a devastating 5 for 24 to seal a comprehensive victory. Hampshire (2nd, 8W 4L, 32pts) consolidate their playoff position, while Essex (7th, 7W 5L, 28pts) slip further down the table.
Hampshire’s Batting Blitz – 211 for 3
Essex won the toss and elected to bowl, but Hampshire’s top order made them pay immediately. Toby Albert set the tone with 22 off 25 balls (3 fours) before falling caught at 60 for 1 in the 8th over.
James Vince then took centre stage with one of the most explosive innings of the season. He smashed 125 off just 61 balls at a strike rate of 205, with 14 fours and 7 sixes, building a 139-run stand with Joe Weatherley (46 off 26, 3 fours, 3 sixes at 177 strike rate) that shifted the match decisively in Hampshire’s favour. Vince’s assault took Hampshire from 60 for 1 in the 8th over to 199 for 2 in the 18th, leaving Essex chasing leather.
Weatherley fell caught at 177 for 3 in the 17th over, but the damage was done. Hilton Cartwright (14 off 8, 1 four) and Ben Mayes finished unbeaten as Hampshire plundered 211 in 20 overs.
Simon Harmer was Essex’s most economical bowler with 1 for 31 from 4 overs, while Samuel Cook took 1 for 30 from 4. Shane Snater (1 for 51 from 4) and Charlie Bennett (0 for 32 from 2) were expensive, with the latter’s 16 economy rate particularly damaging.
Essex’s Collapse – 136 All Out
Essex’s chase never gained traction. Paul Walter (10 off 6, 2 fours) fell caught at 11 for 1 in the 1st over, and Jordan Cox departed for just 4 at 15 for 3 in the 1st over itself. Michael Pepper (6 off 8, 1 four) was caught at 24 for 2 in the 3rd over.
Charlie Allison provided the only meaningful resistance with 44 off 33 balls (3 fours, 1 six) at 133 strike rate, building a 76-run stand with Luc Benkenstein (17 off 14, 1 four, 1 six) that briefly threatened to make a contest of it. But Allison fell caught at 100 for 4 in the 13th over, and the collapse accelerated.
Matthew Critchley (13 off 15, 1 four) and Simon Harmer (7 off 7) offered little resistance, with Harmer falling LBW at 104 for 7 in the 14th over. Noah Thain (10 off 12, 1 four) and Shane Snater (1 off 7) fell in quick succession, leaving Essex 9 for 136 – a 75-run defeat.
Sonny Baker’s Five-Wicket Haul
Sonny Baker was the architect of Essex’s collapse, taking 5 for 24 from 4 overs at an economy of 6 – a performance that ranks among the finest bowling displays of the season. His pace and accuracy dismantled Essex’s middle order, with each wicket tightening Hampshire’s grip on the match.
James Fuller chipped in with 2 for 24 from 4 overs, while Scott Currie (1 for 33 from 4) and Andrew Neal (1 for 26 from 4) kept the pressure on. Chris Wood was economical with 0 for 29 from 4 overs.

Turning Point
The match turned decisively when James Vince and Joe Weatherley combined for a 139-run stand between the 8th and 17th overs. Vince’s assault – 65 runs off 33 balls in the middle overs – took Hampshire from a modest 60 for 1 to a commanding 199 for 2. Essex’s bowlers had no answer to the onslaught, and by the time the pair were separated, the match was effectively over. Essex’s chase never recovered from the early loss of Cox and Walter, and Sonny Baker‘s 5 for 24 ensured there would be no late drama.
