Somerset beat Worcestershire by 78 runs – T20 Blast Match Report
Somerset won by 78 runs in the 108th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at The Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton. Will Smeed struck 52 off just 31 balls to anchor Somerset’s total of 194, before Riley Meredith and Jack Leach dismantled Worcestershire’s chase with a combined 6 wickets. Somerset (5th, 7W 5L, 28pts) move to within striking distance of the top four, while Worcestershire (12th, 6W 6L, 24pts) remain in the bottom half despite a spirited effort.
Somerset’s Explosive Batting Display
Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bowl, but Somerset’s top order came out swinging. Will Smeed set the tone with a blistering 52 off 31 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes) at a strike rate of 168, putting Somerset on the front foot early. Thomas Rew complemented him perfectly with a quickfire 42 off 19 (4 fours, 4 sixes) at 221 strike rate, taking the attack to Worcestershire’s bowlers in the powerplay. The pair added 75 runs by the 5th over, establishing a dominant platform.
Smeed’s dismissal at 117-1 in the 10th over marked a turning point, but Somerset’s middle order kept the momentum rolling. James Rew contributed a brisk 28 off 24 (1 four, 1 six), while Lewis Gregory produced a match-defining cameo of 28 off 16 (1 four, 2 sixes) to propel Somerset towards 194. Daniel Sams added late impetus with 10 off 6 (1 six), ensuring Somerset finished with a commanding total.
Matthew Waite was Worcestershire’s standout bowler with 3-39 from 4 overs, while Usama Mir took 2-28 from 4. Tom Taylor (1-41) and Ben Allison (1-34) were expensive, conceding at over 10 runs per over as Somerset’s batsmen dominated the powerplay.
Worcestershire’s Chase Crumbles
Worcestershire’s reply never gained traction. Isaac Mohammed started positively with 17 off 10 (3 fours) but fell at 37-1 in the 4th over. Henry Cullen (18 off 14) and Gareth Roderick (39 off 28, 5 fours) kept Worcestershire in the hunt briefly, but the loss of wickets at regular intervals proved fatal.
Riley Meredith was exceptional for Somerset, claiming 3-17 from 3 overs at an economy of 5.67 – a masterclass in death bowling. Jack Leach added 3-20 from 3 overs, strangling Worcestershire’s middle order with tight lines and variations. Daniel Sams took 2-12 from 2 overs, while Jake Ball claimed 1-6 from 1. Worcestershire were bowled out for 116 in 16 overs, falling 78 runs short and suffering a comprehensive defeat.

Turning Point

However, Somerset’s middle order – led by James Rew and Lewis Gregory – rebuilt the innings to reach 194, a total that proved too steep for Worcestershire’s batting lineup.
