Somerset beat Northamptonshire by 7 wickets (with 30 balls remaining) – T20 Blast Match Report
Somerset won by 7 wickets (with 30 balls remaining) in the 96th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at The Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton. A devastating opening partnership from Will Smeed and Thomas Rew dismantled Northamptonshire’s bowling attack, with Somerset chasing down 163 in just 15 overs to inflict a first defeat on the league leaders.
Northamptonshire’s Innings – McManus Fires but Falls Short
Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl, but Northamptonshire made early inroads through Ricardo Vasconcelos (23 off 16, 5 fours) and Nathan McSweeney (14 off 14, 1 four). The early momentum evaporated when Chris Lynn departed for just 1 at 24/1 in the 3rd over, setting the tone for a fragile middle order.
The innings pivoted on Lewis McManus, who produced a stunning counter-attack with 76 off 43 balls (7 fours, 4 sixes) at a strike rate of 177. McManus carried Northamptonshire from 63/3 in the 9th over to 162/8, building a crucial 99-run stand with Saif Zaib (23 off 16, 3 fours). However, the loss of key batsmen around him – David Willey fell for 12 at 90/5 in the 12th over, and Louis Kimber managed just 1 at 132/7 – left Northamptonshire short of a total that might have proved competitive.
Daniel Sams was the standout bowler for Somerset, claiming 3/16 from 4 overs at an economy of 4.0 – a miserly display that proved decisive. Jake Ball took 2/48 from 4 overs, while Craig Overton and Riley Meredith each claimed a wicket. Northamptonshire’s 162/8 looked competitive on paper, but the quality of Somerset’s bowling attack would prove too much.
Somerset’s Chase – Smeed and Rew Blitz
Somerset’s reply was a masterclass in aggressive batting. Will Smeed and Thomas Rew came out swinging, combining for 92 runs off just 40 balls in a devastating opening stand. Smeed struck 46 off 20 (7 fours, 2 sixes) at a strike rate of 230, while Rew matched him with 46 off 20 (5 fours, 3 sixes) at an identical strike rate of 230. The pair took Northamptonshire’s attack apart, reaching 74/1 by the 5th over before Smeed fell at 74/1 in the 5th.
Rew’s dismissal at 106/2 in the 8th over brought Tom Kohler-Cadmore to the crease, and he continued the onslaught with an unbeaten 38 off 28 (4 sixes) at a strike rate of 136. James Rew contributed 24 off 18 (4 fours) before Somerset sealed the chase at 165/3 in just 15 overs, with 30 balls remaining. The margin of victory – 7 wickets – underscored the gulf in quality between the two sides on the night.
David Willey was the pick of Northamptonshire’s bowlers with 1/34 from 4 overs, while Ben Sanderson and George Scrimshaw each took a wicket. But with Smeed and Rew in such devastating form, nothing could stem the Somerset tide.
