Essex beat Hampshire by 7 wickets (with 24 balls remaining) – T20 Blast Match Report
Essex won by 7 wickets (with 24 balls remaining) in the 97th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at County Ground, Chelmsford. Matthew Critchley delivered a match-defining all-round performance – 4/16 from 3.5 overs with the ball and 27 off 13 with the bat – as Essex dismantled Hampshire’s modest total to move to 6W 5L (22pts) and keep their qualification hopes alive. Hampshire, despite their league position, were outplayed across both disciplines and slip to 7L 3T (28pts).
Hampshire Collapse to 130 All Out
Essex won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that proved inspired. Hampshire’s innings never gained traction, with early wickets setting the tone for a disastrous collapse. James Vince fell for just 1 at 2/1 in the opening over, bowled by Shane Snater, leaving Hampshire in immediate trouble.
Toby Albert provided brief resistance with 20 off 13 (4 fours) before being clean bowled at 27/2 in the 3.2nd over. Joe Weatherley then struck 34 off 20 (6 fours) at a strike rate of 170, building a 66-run stand with Ben Mayes (29 off 14, 3 fours, 2 sixes, strike rate 207) to haul Hampshire to 93/3 in the 9th over. But the partnership fell apart as quickly as it formed.
Critchley was the architect of Hampshire’s downfall, taking 4/16 from 3.5 overs – a miserly spell that suffocated the middle order. Hilton Cartwright (4 off 4), Tristan Stubbs (2 off 4), and James Fuller (19 off 14, 1 four, 2 sixes) all fell in quick succession. Simon Harmer chipped in with 1/1 from 1 over, while Snater took 3/33 from 3 overs. Hampshire’s tail offered nothing – Scott Currie (1 off 3), Andrew Neal (3 off 10), and Chris Wood (9 off 7) could not arrest the slide. Hampshire limped to 130 all out in 15.5 overs.
Essex Cruise to Victory
Paul Walter took charge of the chase from the outset, striking 52 off 37 (5 fours, 2 sixes) at a strike rate of 141 to anchor Essex’s reply. Michael Pepper provided explosive support with 34 off 21 (5 fours, 1 six, strike rate 162), building a 46-run opening stand that set the tone for a comfortable victory.
When Pepper fell clean bowled at 46/1 in the 5.3rd over, Charlie Allison (10 off 15) steadied the ship before Luc Benkenstein (10 off 10) kept the momentum going. The match was effectively decided when Critchley arrived at the crease and unleashed 27 off just 13 balls (2 fours, 2 sixes, strike rate 208) to seal the contest with 24 balls remaining. Essex reached 134/3 in 16 overs, a dominant display that showcased their superiority across both disciplines.
Sonny Baker took 2/28 from 4 overs for Hampshire, while Scott Currie claimed 1/14 from 3. But Hampshire’s bowling lacked the incision needed to trouble Essex’s batting lineup, which was in complete control throughout the chase.
