Surrey won by 8 wickets (with 16 balls remaining) in the 89th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at Kennington Oval. Jason Roy delivered a masterclass, smashing 103 off 58 balls at a strike rate of 178 to steer Surrey to a commanding chase victory. The win lifts Surrey to 6th (6W 4L, 24pts) while Sussex remain rooted to 17th (2W 8L, 8pts) with playoff hopes fading fast.
Sussex Post 176 for 7
Surrey won the toss and elected to bowl first. Sussex made a brisk start through Harrison Ward (28 off 26, 2 fours, 1 six) and Daniel Hughes (9 off 6, 2 fours), but the opening stand crumbled at 85/2 in the 8th over when Ward fell caught.
George Thomas then took centre stage with a scintillating 57 off just 27 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes) at a strike rate of 211, propelling Sussex towards a competitive total. He was dismissed at 100/3 in the 10th over, but James Coles steadied the ship with an unbeaten 42 off 29 (1 four, 2 sixes). Tom Alsop chipped in with 21 off 15 before falling at 138/4 in the 14th over, while Charlie Tear was run out for 2 at 142/5 and Tom Price departed for 1 at 145/6.
Jack Carson added 5 off 4 before being caught at 159/7, while Danny Briggs finished unbeaten on 8 off 4 (1 four, 1 six). Sussex reached 176 for 7 from their 20 overs – a total that looked competitive but would prove no match for Surrey’s firepower.
Chris Jordan was the standout bowler for Surrey, taking 2/23 from 4 overs at an economy of 5.75. Tom Lawes claimed 2/29 from 3 overs, while Reece Topley took 1/32 from 3 and Jordan Clark picked up 1/27 from 3.
Roy’s Onslaught Settles the Chase
Surrey’s reply was a masterclass in aggressive batting. Jason Roy took the attack to Sussex from the opening ball, racing to 103 off just 58 balls (6 fours, 8 sixes) at a strike rate of 178. He was the centrepiece of a dominant display, barely putting a foot wrong as he dismantled the Sussex bowling attack.
Laurie Evans fell early for 10 at 26/1 in the 3rd over, caught off Sean Hunt‘s bowling. Josh Philippe provided crucial support with 31 off 20 (2 fours, 1 six) before being caught at 104/2 in the 11th over. Daniel Lawrence then joined Roy to finish the job, scoring an unbeaten 28 off 18 (2 fours, 2 sixes) as Surrey reached 177 for 2 in just 17.2 overs – with 16 balls to spare.
Sean Hunt was Sussex’s only bright spot with the ball, taking 2/28 from 3.2 overs. James Coles conceded 40 from 4 overs without taking a wicket, while Tymal Mills went for 40 from 4, Danny Briggs for 38 from 3, and Tom Price for 28 from 3.
