Somerset beat Derbyshire by 27 runs – T20 Blast Match Report
Somerset won by 27 runs in the 86th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at County Ground, Derby. Will Smeed delivered a masterclass with the bat – 89 off just 51 balls at a strike rate of 175 – as Somerset posted 214/6, before Derbyshire fell short at 187/7 despite a valiant effort from Aneurin Donald. The win lifts Somerset to 13th (4W 5L, 16pts) while Derbyshire remain 15th (2W 5L 2T, 12pts) and facing mounting pressure in the group stage.
Somerset’s Batting Blitz – 214/6
Somerset won the toss and elected to bat, and Will Smeed set the tone immediately with a stunning 89 off 51 balls (5 fours, 6 sixes). His aggressive intent from ball one put Derbyshire on the back foot, and he was the centrepiece of Somerset’s powerplay assault. Thomas Rew provided explosive support with 39 off 22 (5 fours, 2 sixes) at a strike rate of 177, building a 76-run opening stand before falling clean bowled at 76/1 in the 7th over.
James Rew departed cheaply for 2 at 79/2, but Tom Kohler-Cadmore maintained the momentum with 39 off 22 (2 fours, 3 sixes) at a strike rate of 177. Smeed’s dismissal – clean bowled at 183/3 in the 16th over – came after he had already done the damage, leaving Somerset well-placed. Daniel Sams (12 off 8) and Joshua Thomas (8 off 5) added late cameos, with Craig Overton finishing unbeaten on 12 off 7.
Martin Andersson was Derbyshire’s standout bowler, taking 3/33 from 4 overs at an economy of 8.25, but even his discipline could not contain Somerset’s batting firepower. Sufiyan Muqeem took 2/33 from 4 overs, while Nick Potts went for 46 from just 2 overs.
Derbyshire’s Chase Falls Short – 187/7
Aneurin Donald produced a stunning counter-attack, smashing 65 off just 27 balls (6 fours, 6 sixes) at a strike rate of 241 to give Derbyshire hope. He was dismissed at 74/1 in the 5th over, but his early fireworks had set the platform. Martin Andersson fell for just 1 at 45/2, leaving Derbyshire needing a rebuild.
Harry Came (28 off 21, 2 fours) and Wayne Madsen (43 off 31, 6 fours) steadied the ship with a 65-run partnership, taking Derbyshire to 110/2 in the 10th over. However, Madsen’s dismissal – clean bowled at 161/4 in the 17th over – shifted momentum back to Somerset. Ross Whiteley (29 not out off 21, 1 four, 1 six) fought hard in the final overs, but the asking rate had climbed too high.
Jake Ball was superb with the ball for Somerset, taking 2/34 from 4 overs. Daniel Sams added 2/26 from 3 overs with the ball to complement his batting contribution, while Craig Overton took 1/40 from 4 and Riley Meredith claimed 1/41 from 4.
