Middlesex beat Essex by 4 wickets (with 6 balls remaining) – T20 Blast Match Report
Middlesex won by 4 wickets (with 6 balls remaining) in the 84th match of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 at County Ground, Chelmsford. Simon Harmer produced a devastating 56 off 28 balls with the bat and took 2/15 with the ball, but it proved insufficient as Middlesex chased down 143 with 6 balls to spare. The loss leaves Essex (9th, 5W 5L, 20pts) treading water in mid-table, while Middlesex (18th, 2W 8L, 8pts) claim a vital away victory.
Essex Innings – Harmer Carries the Bat
Middlesex won the toss and elected to bowl first. Essex’s top order crumbled under pressure, with Paul Walter (22 off 17, 4 fours) falling at 29/1 in the 4th over, Michael Pepper bowled for 5 at 9/2 in the 2nd, and Jordan Cox caught for just 1 at 24/3 in the 3rd. Charlie Allison (13 off 15, 2 fours) and Luc Benkenstein (11 off 13, 1 four) offered brief resistance, but the middle order continued to disintegrate.
Luke Hollman was the standout bowler for Middlesex, taking 4/21 from 4 overs at an economy of 5.25 – a miserly display that kept Essex under constant pressure. Naavya Sharma chipped in with 2/33 from 4 overs, while Sebastian Morgan and Matthew Boyle took one apiece.
Essex’s salvation came from Simon Harmer, who unleashed a brutal assault in the death overs. His 56 off just 28 balls – featuring 6 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 200 – transformed what could have been a meagre total into a competitive one. Mackenzie Jones (19 off 13, 1 four, 1 six) provided useful support at the end, but Harmer’s pyrotechnics were the difference-maker. Essex finished on 142/8 from their 20 overs.
Middlesex Chase – Hollman Seals the Deal
Middlesex’s reply began shakily. Matthew Boyle (12 off 9, 1 four, 1 six) fell early at 17/2 in the 2nd over, and Max Holden was caught for just 3 at 20/3 in the 3rd. Josh de Caires (15 off 14, 1 four, 1 six) departed at 53/1, leaving Middlesex at 74/4 after 9.5 overs.
Leus du Plooy (38 off 24, 4 fours, 2 sixes) provided the crucial middle-order impetus with a strike rate of 158, building a vital partnership before falling at 74/4. Joe Cracknell (35 off 27, 5 fours) steadied the ship with a composed knock, and Luke Hollman (32 off 27, 3 fours, 1 six) finished the job with an unbeaten 32 to seal victory with 6 balls remaining. Middlesex reached 143/6 from 19 overs.
Samuel Cook took 2/24 from 4 overs for Essex, while Simon Harmer claimed 2/15 from 4 overs with the ball – a miserly performance that underscored his all-round class. Shane Snater (1/39 from 4) and Matthew Critchley (1/34 from 4) also took wickets, but couldn’t stem the flow.

Turning Point
The match pivoted on Simon Harmer‘s explosive 56 off 28 in Essex’s final overs. Had Essex managed only 110-120, Middlesex’s chase would have been straightforward. Instead, Harmer’s strike rate of 200 lifted the total to 142, making it a genuine contest. Yet Middlesex’s reply, anchored by du Plooy and Cracknell, proved just enough. The loss of Ben Geddes (bowled for 1 at 58/5 in the 8th over) briefly threatened the chase, but Hollman‘s unbeaten 32 sealed it.
