How Statz Rating works:
- Each player receives a contextual match impact score based on their all-round contribution — batting, bowling, and situational factors.
- Ratings are scaled against the season benchmark so they are directly comparable across fixtures and to the season leaderboard.
- A typical top performer scores around 100. Exceptional performances can exceed 100.
Sussex vs Surrey – T20 Blast 2026 Match Report | Statz
Surrey Cruise Past Sussex by 7 Wickets as Lawrence and Jacks Dominate at Hove
Surrey won by 7 wickets (with 27 balls remaining) in a comprehensive T20 Blast victory at the County Ground in Hove. Match 61 of the 2026 season was a statement win for Surrey, who chased down Sussex‘s 171 all out with 4.3 overs to spare, strengthening their qualification push in the process.
Sussex won the toss and elected to bat, but a middle-order collapse and Surrey’s ruthless chase meant the hosts never truly threatened.
Sussex Innings: Hughes and Ward Fire Before Collapse
Sussex started aggressively. Daniel Hughes was in sensational touch, smashing 45 off just 19 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes at a strike rate of 237. His opening partner Harrison Ward matched him shot for shot with 49 off 29 (7 fours, 2 sixes, SR 169). The pair put on 94 for the first wicket inside the powerplay – a blistering start.
Ward fell LBW at 94-1 in the eighth over, and when Hughes was caught at 96-2 just one over later, the momentum shifted dramatically. James Coles managed only 2 off 5 before being caught at 104-3. Oliver Carter was bowled for 2 at 109-4, and John Simpson (12 off 12) fell at 122-5. Sussex had gone from 94-0 to 122-5 in just over 5 overs.
Tom Alsop (31 off 20, 2 fours, 1 six) and Tom Price (14 off 13) stabilised briefly, but wickets continued to fall. Ollie Robinson (3 off 4), Danny Briggs (9 off 7) and Tymal Mills (0 off 2) all departed cheaply as Sussex were bowled out for 171 in 19.3 overs.
Daniel Lawrence was outstanding with 2-18 from 4 overs at an economy of just 4.50 – exceptional in T20 cricket. Tom Lawes took 3-26 from 4 overs (6.50), while Reece Topley grabbed 3-16 from 2.3 overs. Chris Jordan chipped in with 2-30 from 3 overs.
Surrey Chase: Jacks and Philippe Make It Look Easy
Jason Roy hit 12 off 8 (1 four, 1 six) before falling at 21-1 in the third over. But from there, Will Jacks and Josh Philippe put on a devastating second-wicket partnership that effectively killed the contest.
Philippe was superb, crashing 52 off 28 balls with 10 fours and a six at a strike rate of 186. Jacks was even more destructive – his unbeaten 70 off 39 featured 6 fours and 4 sixes at 179. The pair added 103 in just 7.3 overs for the second wicket before Philippe was caught at 124-2.
Sam Curran made 9 off 10 before departing at 138-3, but Lawrence joined Jacks and finished the job in style. Lawrence smashed an unbeaten 20 off just 8 balls (2 fours, 1 six, SR 250) as Surrey romped home in the 16th over.
Coles was Sussex’s best bowler with 2-35 from 4 overs, while Robinson took 1-28 from 4 overs (economy 7.00). Mills (0-35 from 2 overs), Henry Crocombe (0-31 from 2 overs) and Briggs (0-32 from 2.3 overs) were all expensive as Surrey’s batters dominated.
Statz MVP: Daniel Lawrence (161.71)
Daniel Lawrence earns the Statz MVP with an exceptional match impact rating of 161.71 out of 100. His all-round brilliance – 2-18 from 4 overs with the ball strangling the Sussex middle order, then an explosive 20 off 8 to finish the chase – made him the clear standout. The Statz algorithm calculates impact based on match context, and Lawrence’s economy rate of 4.50 in a match where 346 runs were scored was truly outstanding. No official Man of the Match was named.
Top 5 Statz Ratings
- Daniel Lawrence (SUR) – 161.71: Dominant all-round display with 2-18 bowling (econ 4.50) and 20* off 8 to seal the win.
- Tom Lawes (SUR) – 100.27: Excellent 3-26 from 4 overs at 6.50 dismantled the Sussex middle order.
- Will Jacks (SUR) – 85.74: Unbeaten 70 off 39 (6 fours, 4 sixes) anchored the chase from start to finish.
- Daniel Hughes (SUS) – 80.66: Blistering 45 off 19 (SR 237) set the tone in the powerplay.
- James Coles (SUS) – 67.38: Handy 2-35 bowling figures in a match where runs flowed freely.
Turning Point
Harrison Ward’s LBW dismissal at 94-1 (7.4 overs) was the moment Sussex lost control. He had 49 off 29 and was in the middle of a 94-run opening blitz. His departure – followed by Hughes one over later at 96-2 – triggered a collapse of 8 wickets for 77 runs that turned a powerful batting platform into an underwhelming 171 all out. With the openers gone, Surrey’s bowling attack squeezed the life out of the innings.
Match Context
This was match 61 of 115 in the T20 Blast 2026 season. Surrey move to 5th in the standings (W4 L3, 16 points), keeping pace in a congested mid-table. Sussex remain rooted in 17th (W2 L5, 8 points) and their qualification hopes are fading fast. The comprehensive nature of this defeat – chased down with 27 balls to spare – will be a concern for Sussex heading into the second half of the group stage.
