England beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets (with 47 balls remaining) – T20 Internationals Match Report
England won by 6 wickets (with 47 balls remaining) in the 148th match of 179 in the T20 Internationals at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. Tom Banton delivered a devastating 52 off 24 balls to steer the hosts to a commanding chase victory, while Liam Dawson took 3/32 to dismantle Sri Lanka’s batting order. England’s second-ranked ICC T20I side proved far too strong for their visitors, completing the task in just 12.1 overs.
Sri Lanka’s Struggle to 145
England won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that paid immediate dividends. Pathum Nissanka opened aggressively with 37 off 21 balls (4 fours, 1 six) at a strike rate of 176, but Liam Dawson struck early to remove him caught at 75/1 in the 8.6th over. Lahiru Udara (21 off 20, 5 fours) fell at 56/2 in the 5th over, and Kamil Mishara departed for a duck at 56/3 in the next ball.
Charith Asalanka steadied the innings with 31 off 31 (3 fours) but found little support. Kamindu Mendis (12 off 8, 2 fours) was clean bowled by Dawson at 89/5 in the 10.5th over, and Dasun Shanaka managed just 4 off 4 at 95/6 in the 11th. Wanindu Hasaranga provided late impetus with 27 off 22 (2 fours, 1 six) but it proved insufficient as Sri Lanka limped to 145 all out.
Dawson was the standout bowler, claiming 3/32 from 4 overs at an economy of 8. Jofra Archer took 2/34 from 4 overs, while Jamie Overton claimed 2/23 from 4 and Adil Rashid picked up 1/18 from 3. Sonny Baker was economical with 1/15 from 4 overs.
England’s Explosive Chase
England‘s reply was a masterclass in aggressive batting. Jos Buttler struck 30 off 16 balls (4 fours, 1 six) before falling caught at 55/1 in the 5th over. Aneurin Donald (21 off 13, 2 fours, 1 six) departed at 51/2 in the 4.4th over, but Harry Brook exploded with 23 off just 8 balls (1 four, 3 sixes) at a strike rate of 288 before being caught at 79/3 in the 6.6th over.
Tom Banton then took centre stage, smashing an unbeaten 52 off 24 (2 fours, 4 sixes) at a strike rate of 217 to carry England over the line. Jordan Cox (12 off 7, 1 six) chipped in at 136/4 in the 10.6th over, but Banton’s pyrotechnics made the result a formality. England reached 146/4 in just 12.1 overs, winning with 47 balls to spare.
Wanindu Hasaranga took 1/42 from 3 overs for Sri Lanka, while Dushmantha Chameera claimed 1/29 from 3. Eshan Malinga took 1/27 from 2.1 overs and Tharindu Ratnayake picked up 1/25 from 2, but Sri Lanka’s bowling lacked the discipline needed to contain England’s firepower.
