Year by Year Breakdown
2008 – Rajasthan Royals
Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural IPL under Shane Warne. One of sport’s great underdog stories – the lowest-budget squad winning the first edition. Their only title to date.
2009 – Deccan Chargers
Deccan Chargers, a franchise from Hyderabad, caused a surprise in South Africa where the tournament was played due to the Indian general election. The franchise was later terminated and replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad.
2010 and 2011 – Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings under MS Dhoni established themselves as the first IPL dynasty. Back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011 set the tone for a franchise built on stability, experience, and Dhoni’s ice-cool finishing.
2012 and 2014 – Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders with Gautam Gambhir at the helm won in 2012 and 2014. Sunil Narine’s spin was central to both campaigns – a player who remains just as valuable for KKR today.
2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020 – Mumbai Indians
This is where the record books get rewritten. Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL franchise with five titles – and four of those came in a seven-year spell from 2013 to 2020. The core of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, Bumrah’s bowling and a relentless squad depth made them the benchmark for how a T20 franchise should be built.
2016 – Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad won their only IPL title in 2016, built around David Warner’s batting and the brilliance of Rashid Khan-era bowling. Warner hit over 800 runs that season – an IPL record at the time.
2018, 2021, 2023 – Chennai Super Kings
CSK came back from a two-year suspension to win the 2018 title – one of sport’s great comebacks. Two more followed in 2021 and 2023, matching Mumbai’s five-title haul. Dhoni’s fingerprints are on every one of them.
2022 – Gujarat Titans
Gujarat Titans, one of two new franchises entering in 2022, won the title in their debut season under Hardik Pandya. Rashid Khan was central. A remarkable achievement for a first-year side – not replicated since.
2024 – Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR won a third title in 2024, the most recent team to lift the trophy before the 2025 season. Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy’s spin combination was devastating. Defending champions going into 2025.
2025 – Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally ended their long wait in 2025. The most painful near-misses in IPL history – three final defeats – before Kohli and company delivered. One of the most celebrated moments in IPL history.
What the History Tells You About IPL 2026 Betting
Seventeen years of IPL history points to some clear patterns worth knowing before betting on 2026.
Mumbai and Chennai dominate – but neither has won since 2023
Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings share ten of the seventeen titles between them. Both have gone without since 2023. Their squads – Bumrah, Rohit, Dhoni, Ruturaj – still have the quality to win it. History says don’t count either out.
KKR are the reigning back-to-back form team
Kolkata Knight Riders won in 2024 and have Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, and Rinku Singh at the core. Three IPL titles say this is a squad that knows how to win in knockout cricket. Worth serious consideration in the outright market.
RCB went from eternal bridesmaids to champions
Defending champions RCB won in 2025 but defending an IPL title is notoriously difficult – only MI and CSK have successfully done it. Kohli is still there, Salt adds firepower, but history suggests a step back is more likely than back-to-back.
New franchises don’t win – except GT in 2022
Gujarat Titans aside, no new franchise has won the IPL title. Lucknow Super Giants have been consistent without winning since 2022. History is a cautionary note for those looking to ante-post LSG.
Gujarat Titans are the value pick
Two finals appearances in their first two seasons, one title. Rashid Khan is still there. Shubman Gill captains. Jos Buttler adds world-class overseas batting. Gujarat Titans are the value play in the outright market – strong squad, elite bowling, and a track record that suggests they know how to peak at the right time.
