How Statz Rating works:
- Each player receives a contextual match impact score based on their all-round contribution — batting, bowling, and situational factors.
- Ratings are scaled against the season benchmark so they are directly comparable across fixtures and to the season leaderboard.
- A typical top performer scores around 100. Exceptional performances can exceed 100.
Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Punjab Kings – IPL 2026 Match Report | Statz
Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Punjab Kings by 33 runs in the 49th match of 74 in the Indian Premier League 2026, played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. SRH stay top of the table with 14 points from 11 games – Punjab’s first defeat in four leaves them second on 13 from 10. It’s a statement win for Hyderabad at a critical stage of the season.
First Innings: SRH Post 235/4
Punjab Kings won the toss and sent SRH in – a decision that backfired spectacularly. Abhishek Sharma set the tone immediately, smashing 35 off just 13 balls at a strike rate of 269 before Arshdeep got him caught at 54/1 in the 3.3rd over. Travis Head kept the foot down alongside him, adding 38 off 19 (SR 200) before falling at 84/2 in the 6.4th over.
Ishan Kishan came in at three and provided the platform in the middle overs, scoring 55 off 32 with 4 sixes. His dismissal at 172/3 in the 14.4th over – caught off Yuzvendra Chahal – opened the door for the carnage. Heinrich Klaasen went on to hit 69 off 43 at the death, and Nitish Kumar Reddy smashed an unbeaten 29 off 13 (SR 223) to finish the innings at 235/4. A total that always looked 20 short of what the pitch could offer, but 20 too many for Punjab’s bowlers to defend.
For Punjab, Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick with 1/32 from 4 overs (Econ 8.00). Lockie Ferguson took 1/41 (Econ 10.25) and Arshdeep Singh 1/43 (Econ 10.75). Marco Jansen had a difficult evening – 0/61 from 4 overs at an economy of 15.25.
Second Innings: Connolly Fights Alone
Punjab’s chase fell apart at the top. Priyansh Arya went first ball of the first over, caught for 1 at 4/1 (over 0.6). Prabhsimran Singh followed immediately, caught for 3 at 4/2 in the 1.1st over. At 4/2 from the first over, the chase was in crisis.
What followed was a one-man show from Cooper Connolly. The Australian youngster batted through the innings to score 107 not out off 59 balls – 7 fours and 8 sixes at a strike rate of 181. He had no real support. Shreyas Iyer went for 5 at 23/3 (over 3.2) off Pat Cummins. Marcus Stoinis gave it a go – 28 off 14 (SR 200) before he was caught at 63/4 in the 6.4th over. Suryansh Shedge made 25 off 17 and fell at 110/5 in the 11.4th over. Shashank Singh went for 4 at 119/6 in the 12.3rd over.
Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with 1/11 from 2 overs (Econ 5.50). Pat Cummins took 2/34 from his 4 overs. Shivang Kumar picked up 2/45 (Econ 11.25). Punjab finished 202/7 – a fighting total, but 33 short.
Statz MVP: Cooper Connolly (113.16)
Statz calculates impact based on match context – and Cooper Connolly scores 113.16, the highest rating in the match. His 107 not out off 59 in a losing cause – 8 sixes, 7 fours, SR 181 – was the only reason this chase stayed alive past the first over. Without him Punjab are bowled out inside 10.
This is a rare moment where Statz and the official decision diverge sharply. The official Player of the Match went to Pat Cummins (59.76) for his 2/34. Cummins was good – but the match impact numbers tell a different story. Connolly’s innings, scored under pressure from ball one, is the performance of the match by some distance.
Top 5 Statz Ratings
- Cooper Connolly (PBKS) – 113.16 – 107* off 59, 8 sixes, SR 181 in a losing cause
- Nitish Kumar Reddy (SRH) – 98.68 – 29* off 13 batting plus 1/11 with the ball, a match-sealing double contribution
- Abhishek Sharma (SRH) – 73.32 – 35 off 13 at SR 269, the powerplay launch that set SRH’s platform
- Heinrich Klaasen (SRH) – 62.58 – 69 off 43 at the death, top-scored for SRH and pushed the total past 230
- Pat Cummins (SRH) – 59.76 – 2/34 from 4 overs, officially the Player of the Match but ranked 5th by Statz impact
Turning Point
The match was decided in the first over of Punjab’s chase. Priyansh Arya caught out for 1 at 4/1 (over 0.6) – then Prabhsimran Singh gone for 3 at 4/2 (over 1.1). Two wickets in 7 balls, both without a run between them, ended the chase as a competitive contest. From 4/2, Punjab needed one of their middle-order batters to bat through the innings – only Connolly managed it, and he ran out of partners.
Match Context
IPL 2026 Regular Season, 49th match of 74. Both sides sit in the top two – SRH on 14 points (W7 L4) at the summit, Punjab on 13 (W6 L3 NR1) in second. The gap is only one point, but SRH have played one more game. For Hyderabad this is exactly the kind of result that keeps them clear at the top heading into the back half of the league stage. For Punjab, their first loss in four hurts the NRR and raises questions about their top-order fragility – losing two wickets inside the first over in a 236-run chase is not recoverable for any side. Both teams remain firmly in playoff contention. The full IPL 2026 scorecard is available on Statz.
